JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for the operation of large motorized equipment in the performance of a variety of public works and utility maintenance activities.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Operates large motorized equipment.
- Installs, repairs, maintains, and cleans streets, utility lines, and drainage systems.
- Assists with street and utility construction and maintenance.
- Supervises personnel assigned to truck or equipment.
- Services, cleans, and makes minor repairs to equipment.
- Performs preventive maintenance work on equipment; fuels equipment; cleans equipment and tools.
- Assists with snow and ice control.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of heavy equipment operation.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of equipment.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in the care and operation of equipment.
- Skill in the maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of vehicles and equipment
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
The supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES:
Guidelines include traffic laws, safety procedures, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY:
The work consists of related equipment operation duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT:
The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment in support of department operations. Successful performance in this position contributes to the success of department operations.
PERSONAL CONTACTS:
Contacts are typically with other city personnel and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:
Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts heavy objects and climbs ladders.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and occasionally cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use or protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain and maintain a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
