Utility Maintenance Technician

Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to performs technical and non-technical duties in the operation and maintenance of the City’s utility systems.

This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Essential Functions

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Performs daily inspections of vehicles and equipment.
  • Responds to after hour emergencies and performs on call duties.
  • Performs grounds maintenance as directed.
  • Provides as built drawings as directed.
  • Locates underground utilities.
  • Assists in other utility operations as directed.
  • Prepares reports and documents as directed.
  • Performs maintenance of sewer pumping equipment, evaluates equipment for repair or replacement needs; cleans and removes grease.
  • Responds to pumping station alarms.
  • Performs sewer bypass operations of gravity sewer and force mains.
  • Performs smoke and dye tests of sewers, sewer service cleaning and TV inspections.
  • Performs confined space entries of sanitary sewer manholes and pumping stations.
  • Performs grease trap inspections.
  • Operates a waterline flushing program as directed.
  • Operates a fire hydrant maintenance program as directed.
  • Operates a water valve exercising program and water main shutdowns as directed.
  • Performs well maintenance, inspection and testing of chemical dosages.
  • Performs necessary repairs (maintenance) on well equipment.
  • Monitors SCADA System for City Wells.
  • Inspects and test backflow prevention devices.
  • Perform water meter reading as directed.
  • Perform utility billing water meter rereads and work orders as directed.
  • Repair faulty water meters as directed.
  • Performs related work as assigned

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience in plant, utilities or public works maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Physical Demands:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, dancing, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment):

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:

Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.

Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.

Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.

Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.

Traffic; Moving machinery.

Electrical shock; Heights.

Radiation; Disease/pathogens.

Toxic/caustic chemicals; Explosives; Violence.

Other extreme hazards not listed above.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state commercial driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
