The Finance Intern will assist the Finance Department with various tasks, including data analysis, financial reporting, budgeting support, and general administrative duties. This position provides hands-on experience in financial operations while learning key concepts and industry best practices. Additionally, this internship will provide exposure to Employee Resources functions, gaining experience in recruitment, payroll, and policy administration.
Finance & Accounting:
- Assist with processing utility bills/payments, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Provide exceptional customer service in addressing questions and resolving utility billing issues.
- Aid in financial activities such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and capital projects.
- Compile and analyze information for reports, journal entries, and financial reconciliations.
- Assist with the preparation of the City’s Annual Budget and Capital Investment Program development.
- Support records retention efforts, including scanning and organizing financial documents.
- Organize and update financial processes and policy documentation.
- Assist with compiling monthly financial reports and audit preparation.
Municipal Liquor Store & Special Projects:
- Support accounting staff with tasks related to Fridley Liquor financial operations.
- Assist with special projects to improve store operations.
- Assist accounting staff with various responsibilities and tasks related to Fridley Liquor.
Employee Resources:
- Assist in recruitment efforts, including reviewing and refining job descriptions.
- Assist with the implementation of Minnesota Paid Leave by supporting policy development, updating employee communications, maintaining compliance records, and assisting with program related payroll adjustments.
- Help maintain employee records, ensuring accuracy and compliance with retention policies.
- Assist with benefits administration tasks, including researching available options and products.
- Conduct research on best practices, policies, and compliance requirements.
- Assist with training coordination and tracking employee development activities.
- Prepare employment-related communications and assist in drafting policies and procedures.
Administrative & Customer Service:
- Assist with front desk coverage, including answering phone calls, processing payments, and providing exceptional customer service.
- Collaborate with city staff to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in city operations.
- Conduct research, perform data entry, and assist with general administrative tasks.
- Complete special projects and initiatives as assigned.
- Complete other duties as assigned or apparent.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving history.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background and reference check process.
Desired Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with financial systems and software.
- Knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting.
- Familiarity with municipal finance, budgeting, or governmental accounting practices.
