The City of Fridley is seeking two highly motivated and energetic individuals for the summer Parks and Recreation Intern position. Fridley Parks and Recreation Interns will gain comprehensive and meaningful experience in youth and community recreation programming, event management, and working with seasonal staff. This position will be designed according to the needs and interests of the intern and the Fridley Parks and Recreation Department. A typical work week will consist of 32-40 hours (May -August, flexible starting date) including day and evening hours, as well as some weekend hours.
Expected hiring range: $17.67 - $19.42
- Assist with Parks & Recreation program planning, marketing, scheduling, supervision, and customer/program evaluations.
- Deliver youth programming including summer day camps, sports, community outreach, field trips, and special events at a variety of Fridley Parks and Springbrook Nature Center.
- Develop lesson plans, curriculum, and special event plans for youth programs.
- Assist with training and work direction for seasonal staff.
- Lead curriculum development throughout the season.
- Assist with promotion of department programs and activities.
- Assist in administrative tasks (email, mailings, phone, etc.) including seasonal staff time entry and scheduling.
- Interact and provide excellent customer service to the public, participants, and staff.
- Assist the Parks & Recreation Department with various activities, as needed.
- Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of degree program in Parks & Recreation, Education, or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Previous experience working with children/youth.
- Ability to work the entire summer season (May-August) with flexible daytime and evening hours, Monday – Friday and a preferred start date prior to June 2, 2025. Occasional weekend work may occur.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background and reference check process.
- Experience leading outdoor recreation programs (canoeing, archery, biking, etc.)
- Completion of at least two years of study in a related post-secondary program or six months of relevant work experience.
- Ability to interact with the public in a positive manner.
- Ability to work independently and with people of all ages and abilities.
- Ability to work with diverse populations.
- Knowledge of the practices and methods of recreational programming.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with a variety of audiences and groups.
- Ability to handle a variety of assignments under moderate supervision within standard operating procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and deal tactfully with internal and external customers, coworkers and partnering agencies.
