City of Fulton is looking for an overnight Laborer to perform basic unskilled and janitorial duties at City Hall through the Parks and Recreation Department. Distinguishing Features of the Class: This is routine manual work requiring physical endurance and a willingness to perform arduous tasks. Laborers usually work under continues supervision or their activities are subject to frequent inspection. Most employees in the class are in the Department of Public Works, where they usually work at unskilled labor tasks on various municipal public works projects. There are a few Laborer positions in other departments and in some cases the incumbent performs a variety of ordinary unskilled labor tasks associated with that regular activities of the department in which they are employed. A Laborer also does related work as needed.
Typical Work Activities:
- assists in the construction and maintenance of streets, drainage systems by digging and back filling trenches and spreading asphalt, sand or gravel;
- Cleans streets of leaves, dirt and refuse, participates in snow/ice removal and control:
- Works in the City’s waste management program by picking up garbage, recyclables, trash and yard waste;
- Uses hand tools such as shovels, scythes, forks and rakes during maintenance of grounds and beautification work;
- Operates power driven tools and equipment such as saws, compressors, drills, mixers, pumps and mowers;
- Assists in the construction and repair of curbs, sidewalks, culverts, catch basins, storm drains and retaining walls;
- Checks levels of oil, water, batteries and windshield washer solvent in department vehicles;
- Prepares old traffic signs for re-use by sanding, stripping reflective material and wedge painting;
- Assists in the installation and maintenance of traffic signs, street signs and traffic signals;
- Assists in the removal of obstructions from sewers and operates specialized equipment in the process;
- Assists in erecting, assembling and repairing snow fences, barricades, picnic tables and related recreation equipment;
- Assists in the preparation, laying out and maintenance of athletic fields and areas designated for beautification by clearing, grading, lining, reseeding and weeding;
- Performs general work such as removing debris, raking leaves, cutting grass, weeds and trees, shoveling snow and removal of rubbish, trash garbage and litter from public lands and facilities;
- Operates motor vehicles (automobiles and trucks with a GVWR of not more than eighteen thousand pounds).
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Willingness to perform routine manual tasks; ability to lift heavy weights; ability to follow simple oral or written instructions; ability to follow safety procedures; willingness to work outdoors under all weather conditions; physical endurance and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position; and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Minimum Qualifications: Valid New York State Class D driver’s license at time of appointment.
