SUMMARY

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Screens health of prospective employees, advising whether health status is appropriate to specific job placement. Documents disabilities and recommends job modifications as needed.
Treats employees for on-the-job and personal injuries and illness, determining need for further medical or counseling referral. Dispenses medications according to medically approved protocol. Actively manages work-related injuries and illness to promote rapid recovery and return to work and prevent recurrence.
Actively promotes employee wellness by providing immunization, health screening, education, and counseling.
Promotes employee-employer understanding of purposes, policies, and programs of the Employee Health Service.
Performs and follows up periodic physical exams for employees, arranging for further referral and disposition, if necessary. Counsels regarding corrective self care for some conditions.
Interprets medical findings for supervisors and managers related to employee work performance and disability.
Consults with safety personnel and managers about occupational health hazards and assists in recommending corrective measures.
Performs venipunctures, handling blood and other body fluids in accordance with the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens standard.
Maintains employee medical records according to medico-legal standards.
Attends work on continuous and regular basis.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Stays current with developments and new techniques in occupational health field.
Uses community health resources for education and referrals, and maintains good working relationship with community agencies.
Serves on health related committees and boards.
May act in absence of supervisor.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Below are the required education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in nursing related or field and one year experience in professional nursing, occupational health, health care, health teaching, or related area; or, any equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES
Licenses
Valid Florida Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) required.
Certifications
None
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of professional nursing and occupational health care programs.
Knowledge of and ability to apply nursing diagnosis process in clinical settings and to perform physical assessments.
Knowledge of physical requirements involved in proper job placement of workers.
Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal ordinances, laws, and statutes related to occupational health.
Knowledge of computers and relevant software.
Ability to assist in planning, developing, and implementing a city employee health care program.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to work effectively with elected officials, charter officers, department heads, representatives of other agencies, other city employees, and the general public.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess certain physical abilities and be able to withstand work related environmental conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
Work requires physical strength and agility sufficient to safely perform all essential job functions, including the ability to lift, carry, push or pull 30 pounds without assistance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
May be required to work and attend meetings outside regular business hours.
Requires local travel to other general government or GRU locations within the Gainesville area.
