The purpose of being a Swim Instructor is to teach people how to be safe in, on and or around water and to teach people of all ages and varying abilities how to swim. Using a logical progression, the instructor will cover the knowledge and skills needed for aquatic skill development, which in turn, leads to a safer and better swimmer. This position is responsible for planning, organizing and providing quality swimming and water safety instruction.
Attend Frances Meadows Swim Instructor Training sessions and in services.Must be at least 16 years of age.
Instruct and conduct swimming and safety programs as assigned.
Completion and submission of required forms, lesson plans and certificates in a timely manner.
Interact positively and effectively with participants and their families.
Be familiar with basic swim mechanics of all four strokes and be able to perform them proficiently.
Be able to adapt your teaching approaches to the ages, experiences, and abilities of participants so they can meet course objectives.
Provide for the health and safety of participants, including ensuring that all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards, and that materials and equipment are safe.
Cover all material required by the Frances Meadows Fantastic Five swim lesson program.
Communicate regularly with participants and their parents, as appropriate, to ensure they are aware of participant's progress.
Recognize and respond effectively to emergencies in accordance with the facility's emergency action plans.
Enforce all aquatics facility policies, rules and regulations.
Complete records and reports in a timely fashion.
Participate in regular in-service trainings
Complete lesson plans, to be reviewed by the Head WSI on the Friday prior to the start of swim lessons.
NEVER LEAVE PARTICIPANTS UNATTENDED IN OR AROUND THE POOL.
Instruct all lessons in the water.
Other duties, as assigned, by the Head WSI or higher authority to facilitate the safe, sanitary, effective operation of the assigned facility.
Adherence to and enforcement of all Gainesville Parks & Recreation Agency personnel, facility, operational and patron policies, procedures, regulations and rules.
Represent the Gainesville Parks & Recreation Agency and the Aquatic facilities in a positive, professional and consistent manner.
Have knowledge of all Aquatic programs and schedules.
Have knowledge of:
- The swim lesson function and swim strokes (Butterfly, Breaststroke, Backstroke, Freestyle and turns.) Starts and dives.
- Water environmental conditions.
- Water Rescue techniques that are taught in Swim Safety for Swim Coaching and Basic Water Rescue classes.
Know facilities policies and enforce pool/facility rules.
Have a thorough understanding of the EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN for the assigned facility.
No experience required.
Licenses and Certifications:
Be a Red Cross certified Lifeguard or hold Red Cross CPR certification.
Criteria for Success:
Ability to put an emphasis on water safety and drowning prevention as the basis of swimming and water recreation.
Ability to optimize swim skills so that participants can achieve success at regular intervals.
Foreseeing hazards and taking steps to control them before participants step into the water.
Ensuring that there are lifeguards on duty during swim lessons.
Knowing how to use course materials and training equipment safely and effectively.
Ability to inform participants and/or their parents about knowledge and skill evaluation procedures and course completing requirements.
Ability to enforce pool policies while providing a high level of customer service to participants.
Ability to display a positive attitude for all participants and GPRA staff.
Arrives prepared and on time for work and consistently demonstrates service excellence.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to successfully demonstrate all swimming strokes.
Ability to understand and communicate with children.
Ability to lift children in the Swim Lesson Program.
Ability to walk, stand, reach, kneel, and lift throughout the working day and participate in activities that require physical dexterity.
Ability to see clearly.
