Operates heavy duty equipment for the Solid Waste Division assisting with the collection of residential trash, recycling and curbside waste for the City of Gainesville. Equipment may be one or more of the following: Rear loading garbage truck, knuckle boom loaders, brush and limb chippers and dump trucks. May also operate small trucks or assist with other crew members collecting trash. Serves as a crew leader for a team of employees providing prompt, courteous and complete waste removal for customers on a specific route.
Safely operate a heavy truck along a designated route and to the disposal site; follow assigned route and service each customer on route as assigned by the supervisor.
Operate packing mechanism and various levers and handles to activate the lifting and loading mechanism.
Clean waste from the packer blade and truck body on each disposal trip; spray and clean the hopper and truck, if applicable.
Clean area around an accidental waste spill, ensuring adherence to all applicable safety standards and policies.
Courteously interact with all customers and others on a daily basis to ensure all customer routes are serviced in a timely and professional manner.
Continuously monitor waste for evidence of unacceptable waste.
Good time management skills to ensure assigned responsibilities are completed in an efficient and safe manner.
Good follow through ability; adheres to work schedule and follows through on challenges as they arise.
Follow all required safety policies and procedures.
Operate a rear loading packer truck, knuckle boom loader or other equipment to collect residential trash, recycling and curbside debris from City residents.
May operate a pickup truck collecting residential garbage and recycling on specific routes.
Serve as a crew leader for a team collecting trash, recycling and curbside debris.
Assist in training new employees.
Is subject to recall for emergency situations.
May be required to work overtime for non-emergency situations.
Position requires work in various weather conditions.
Will be required to perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Licenses and Certifications:
Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
Must have and maintain a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Due to the safety-sensitive nature of this position, incumbents will be subject to random drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of geography of the City including major streets and landmarks.
Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures.
Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations and safe operation of vehicles.

Ability to follow a pre-planned route to collect trash and recycling and the ability to adjust as needed to insure all trash and recycling is collected on assigned route.
Ability to work well with others and to deal with citizens in a friendly, respectful and professional manner.

Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
Ability to lift objects of up to 50 pounds.
Ability to understand and follow instructions both orally and in writing.
