What are the responsibilities and job description for the Crew Leader- Cemetery position at City of Gainesville?
To serve as lead worker over a small crew of maintenance personnel performing work in the construction, maintenance and repair of the Cemetery; to operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment for the performance of assignments on a regular basis. Positions at this level of responsibility assume the most difficult and responsible type of duties assigned within this series including lead supervision over subordinate staff. Employees are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility and participate in labor activities necessary to complete assigned tasks.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
- Serve as crew leader over subordinate personnel; provide functional and technical guidance to subordinate staff; provide training to new employees; supervises work activities
- Maintain supplies and materials needed in the performance of cemetery functions and submit purchase request as necessary
- Assist Supervisor in planning and scheduling
- Ensure that all established safety practices and regulations are observed while work is performed
- Maintain system and repair problems occurring within assigned tasks
- Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a variety of machinery and equipment including backhoe, trencher, Bob Cat loader, front loader, tractor and various attachments, welder, air compressor, grinder, pumps, chainsaw, dump truck, and mowers
- Troubleshoot and investigate water line leaks; dig up water lines when necessary; locate water line leaks and breaks; assist in repairs, refill trenches after repairs have been made to specifications
- Respond to calls concerning Cemetery emergencies or problems on a stand-by basis; work to reduce state of emergency and correct problems; perform overtime duties as necessary or required in order to maintain proper functioning order as assigned
- Perform maintenance on assigned City vehicle; maintain proper fluid kevels; report the need for any major repairs to supervisor
- Operate equipment and perform duties of subordinates as needed
- Assist Supervisor in budget and bids
- Assist public in locating gravesites of family members buried and identifying ownership in the cemetery
- Maintain service and repair records on Cemetery machinery and equipment
- Setup and remove carpets, chairs, tent, pulpit, and lowering device for burial services; reset fallen headstones
- Pallbearer during graveside services
Additional Duties:
- Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- General landscaping, mowing and construction methods
- Operation and maintenance requirements of a variety of machinery and equipment utilized in the performance of job assignments
- Practices and techniques for repairing and maintaining equipment
- Standard practices and procedures for assigned division
- Safety regulations and traffic safety procedures
Ability to:
- Work independently in the absence of supervision
- Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Learn the location of various City streets and addresses
- Learn the techniques for mixing and pouring concrete
- Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a variety of tools, machinery and equipment relevant to work assignments
- Perform the physical requirements of the job
- Perform work in an undesirable or hazardous equipment including inclement weather, confined spaces and improper illumination
- Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction and maintenance tasks
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Read and understand blue prints and/or plans
- Follow state and local safety procedures and specifications
Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
- Two years experience in landscaping and grounds maintenance operations
- One year of experience in cemetery operations or a related field
- One year of experience using computer skills with Microsoft Excel, Word and Access
Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License(s)/Certification(s):
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Must have ability to obtain Class A or B CDL within 90 days of request if requested by supervisor.
- Must have ability to obtain a TDA Pesticide Applicator’s License within 180 days of request if requested by supervisor.
