To manage, direct and coordinate the activities of the City swimming pool facilities; to coordinate swimming pool activities with other divisions and departments; and to provide responsible staff assistance to the Parks and Recreation Supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

  • Oversee and participate in the maintenance of swimming pool facilities; monitor the chemical balance within the pool; replace filters and chlorine tanks; perform minor repairs; clean and vacuum the pool.
  • Coordinate, promote, implement and evaluate a variety of aquatic activities; recommend changes in program objectives, policies and procedures to assure maximum effectiveness and efficiency; oversee in-service training for the entire staff.
  • Assess community needs and develop a corresponding program of aquatic activities and events; develop and implement plans for dealing with various types of emergency situations.
  • Ensure that the swimming pool facilities comply with relevant health and safety regulations; ensure that pumps and related mechanical devices are functioning properly.
  • Assign work activities and projects; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures.
  • Provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures; recommend employee terminations.
  • Enact measures to maintain a safe environment in and around swimming pool facilities; report incidents, accidents and injuries to the Parks and Recreation Supervisor.
  • Supervise the collection, verification and preparation of deposits for all revenues received.
  • Requisition needed materials and supplies for swimming pool facilities.
  • Secure the swimming pool facilities after hours.
  • Assign weekly employee work schedule and provide and process time sheets.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and techniques of aquatic program development and implementation.
  • Principles and practices of supervision, training and personnel evaluation.
  • Principles and practices of pool management.
  • Proper amounts of chemicals necessary to maintain bacteria free waters.
  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in pool maintenance work.
  • Organize and implement a comprehensive swimming pool program.
  • Proper pool safety rules and regulations.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.


Ability to:

  • Coordinate, organize and implement pool activities and events.
  • Supervise, train and evaluate assigned staff during daily swim program.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment in and around swimming pool.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.


Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


Experience:

Three years of increasingly responsible experience as an assistant swimming pool manager or lifeguard including one year of lead or supervisory responsibility.


Education/Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in swimming pool facility management or a related field.


License(s)/Certification(s):

  • Possession of Lifeguard license.
  • Possession of current C.P.R. and First Aid License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   While performing the duties of this job, the employee is:

  • Regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear; mow, edge grass, weed-eat, and sanitize restrooms.
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Regularly re­quired to climb or balance.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee:

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.
  • Regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, and extreme heat (non-weather).
  • Occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
