General Definition of Work
Performs manual and semiskilled work in a variety of public works construction, maintenance and repair projects, collecting solid waste, performing general grounds keeping duties, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the assigned crew supervisor.
Essential Functions
Operates a variety of mowers and equipment in grass cutting and trimming operations; operates weed eater and leaf blower; removes debris and trash from City properties.
Works as a member of a solid waste collection crew.
Collects garbage and refuse; directs Equipment Operators approach to dumpsters; empties refuse containers into packer truck; operates packing equipment.
Assists in cleaning and maintaining sanitation trucks and grounds keeping equipment.
Assists with snow removal and ice control; mixes salt; spreads salt on sidewalks.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
Special Requirements
May require possession of or ability to acquire flagging certification depending on departmental assignment
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
