The Department of Public Works seeks to fill one (1) position in the Maintenance Worker classification (Pay Range 16) in the Water Division. This is a permanent, overtime-eligible, bargaining unit position with a starting hourly pay rate of $23.88 (Step A).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Operates centrifugal pumps, gasoline engines, control panels, chlorinators, dry and liquid chemical feeders, filters, electric motors, and other water plant equipment.
- Operates personal computers, related software, and SCADA system.
- Performs semi-skilled work in laying and repairing water mains, valves, and hydrants.
- Lays pipes, install valves and hydrants, and makes taps in new construction projects.
- Operates air compressors, jack hammers, drills, tampers, and tapping machine.
- Reads, install, and remove meters.
- Repairs water meter; cleans and test meters for proper operations; and replaces defective and working parts as necessary.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A High School Diploma (or GED) is required.
- Applicants must possess a valid Illinois Class ‘B’ Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement at the time of hire, or must obtain one within six months of hire.
- Knowledge of traffic laws involved in the operation of automotive vehicles and construction equipment.
- Working knowledge of the tools, methods, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of water distribution systems is required.
- Candidates must have the ability to carry out assignments with little or no supervision and be able to understand and follow instructions.
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain a positive working relationship with co-workers and the general public.
- Must adhere to city safety policies and departmental operating procedures.
- Previous customer service experience is preferred.
- Ability to be on 24-hour call in case of emergency municipal procedures.
- An Illinois Water Supply Operator Class ‘D’ (or higher) certification is preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to lift 50-100 pounds on a regular basis and be able to perform heavy to very heavy physical labor. Must be able to climb a ladder, lift, walk, bend, stoop, stand, kneel, reach, and sit. As many of the job duties are outside, the applicant must be able to tolerate manual labor performed in varied and extreme weather conditions.
