ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Galt is accepting applications for Police Officer.

BASE PAY :

Police Officer Salary : $37.46 - $45.99 ($77,916.80 - $95,659.20 Annually)

  • Annual salary shown above is based on working 2080 hours per year.

ADDITIONAL PAY (UPON ASSIGNMENT AND ELIGIBILITY) :

  • Overtime - Paid at time and one-half (1-1 / 2).
  • Bilingual Pay - $50 per month.
  • POST Certificate and Education Incentive Pay - 5% - 10%
  • Canine Handler - 3 / 4 of an hour pay X 7 days a week.
  • Corporal Pay - 5%
  • Field Training Officer (FTO) - 5%
  • Longevity Pay- beginning at 8 years of service - 2.5%; 10 years of service 5%; 12 years of service 7.5%
  • Medical-in-lieu - Employees who waive medical coverage shall receive $200 per month for employee only, $350 per month for employee plus one, and $500 per month for family.

    Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of patrol and community policing duties involving the prevention of crime, the protection of life and property, and the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; makes arrests and transports suspects into custody; assists in processing crime scenes and preserving evidence; assists in the preparation of cases and testifies in court; and performs related work as required.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

    Receives general supervision from an assigned Police Sergeant or management personnel. Exercises no supervision of staff.

  • This is a continuous recruitment and may be closed at any time. Testing will take place on a rolling basis once a sufficient number of applications have been received; as deemed by the City of Galt.
  • This is a sworn journey-level law enforcement class that performs all assignments found in a municipal police department. While incumbents are normally assigned to a specific geographic area for patrol or traffic enforcement, all functional areas of the law enforcement field, including investigation, youth services, administration, and training are included. Incumbents may be armed and may be assigned to work in uniform or plain clothes.

    Emphasis is placed on community-based policing, familiarization between law enforcement and community residents, and collaborative problem solving. This class is distinguished from Police Sergeant in that the latter is the first supervisory level in this sworn class series responsible for organizing, assigning, supervising, and reviewing the work of staff on an assigned shift.

    Education and Experience :

    Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be :

    Equivalent to graduation from high school. Completion of an accredited police academy, two years of college level course work in criminal justice and / or a related field.

    Licenses and Certifications :

  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license within 60 days of hire and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Possession of a Basic Certificate issued by the California State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.).
  • Possession and maintenance of firearms qualification.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; maintain P.O.S.T. physical standards, including mobility, physical strength, and stamina to respond to emergency situations and apprehend suspects; vision to maintain firearms qualification and to read printed material and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking or running or standing on uneven terrain, and climbing and descending structures to access crime scenes and to identify problems or hazards; vision and manual dexterity to operate an emergency response vehicle at high rates of speed in emergency situations. Finger and manual dexterity is needed to operate police services equipment and firearms, and to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work. Employees must possess the ability to apprehend, lift, carry, push, and pull victims, suspects and equipment as determined within P.O.S.T physical standards, which may include the use of proper equipment.

  • ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

    Employees work indoors and outdoors, and are exposed to loud noise levels (infrequent), cold and hot temperatures (frequent), inclement weather conditions, vibrations, confining workspaces, moving vehicles, and hazardous physical substances including dust, gas, chemicals,fumes (frequent), mechanical and / or electrical and to potentially infectious materials such as bodily fluids including blood, transmissible diseases and needles. Other adverse vision and hearing conditions may include poor lighting, fog, faint sounds, or other poor auditory conditions such as distracting background noise.

    EMOTIONAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

    Employees may interact with upset staff and / or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. The principal duties of this class are performed in a field or police station environment with exposure to criminal offenders, mentally ill individuals, and persons potentially infected with communicable diseases.

    Constant concentration, decision making, public contact, exercise sound judgment especially under stressful situations; and working alone.

    Constant ability to comprehend oral and written instructions, organize thoughts and ideas, apply common sense, and make decisions which have significant impact on performing job and communicate via verbally, routine forms, detailed reports, or informal presentations.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background investigation, including fingerprinting. Must be willing to work extended shifts or be called back in emergency situations and work with exposure to difficult circumstances, including exposure to dangerous situations.

    GALT POLICE OFFICER ASSOCIATION (GPOA)

    MEDICAL The City of Galt participates in the CalPERS Health Program. Employees have a wide variety of choices of HMOs and PPOs. Galt Police Officer Association employees receive a set dollar amount for benefits(cafeteria plan) in accordance with the MOU.

    CASH IN-LIEU OF GROUP INSURANCE Employees who choose to waive coverage under the City's medical insurance program shall be compensated $200 per month for waiving employee only coverage, $350 per month for waiving employee plus one and $500 per month for waiving employee plus family coverage.

    DENTAL City pays the total cost of the premium for employee and dependents.

    VISION PLAN City pays the total cost of the premium for employee and dependents.

    LIFE INSURANCE City pays the total cost of premiums for $50,000 coverage.

    HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ACCOUNT City contributes $50 per month into an IRS qualified HRA for each employee to use for reimbursement of current and retiree medical cost reimbursements.

    BI-LINGUAL PAY Eligible employees may receive fifty dollars ($50) per month for bilingual skills if meet the criteria and pass an oral and.or written examination.

  • TUITION REIMBURSEMENT Up to $4,000 per fiscal year for approved reimbursements.

    EDUCATION INCENTIVE PAY

  • Sworn personnel with at least sixty (60) semester units and a POST Intermediate Certificate shall receive an additional five percent (5%) of their base pay.
  • Sworn personnel with a BA or POST Advanced Certificate shall receive an additional five percent (5%) of their base pay.
  • Those eligible for both incentives shall receive a cumulative total of ten percent (10%) of their base pay.
  • INCENTIVE PAY FOR SPECIFIED ASSIGNMENTS

  • K-9 officers : The pay rate for the performance of such work shall be the minimum wage in effect at that time for three-quarters (3 / 4) of an hour seven (7) days a week.
  • FTO / CTO : Any Police Officer assigned to duties as Field Training Officer (FTO) and who is working in the formal capacity of a FTO, shall receive an additional five percent (5%) of his / her base salary for any full hour worked within which he / she is engaged in FTO training.
  • Corporal : Personnel in this assignment will receive an additional five percent (5%) of their base salary.
  • LONG-TERM DISABILITY (LTD) City pays total cost of premium. Maximum monthly benefit $9,000.

    SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE The employee and City both contribute to Social Security / Medicare.

    EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is administered by Guidance Resources. Confidential, employer-paid benefit program designed to assist employees in solving personal problems and managing everyday issues. Available to employees and immediate family.

    FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNT

    Covers IRS approved medical and / or approved dependent care expenses to be paid on a pre-tax basis.

  • Dependent care up to $5,000 annually
  • RETIREMENT SYSTEM (CalPERS)

    Classic CalPERS full time Sworn Safety employees (hired prior to 1 / 1 / 13) are covered under the 3 % @ 50 CalPERS retirement program. City pays total employer contribution for this program and the employee pays 9% employee contribution.

    PEPRA CalPERS Sworn Safety full time employees (hired after 1 / 1 / 13) are covered under the 2.7% @ 57 retirement program. Employees share the Normal Cost rate with the City. This amount is currently is 13.75%.

    DEFERRED COMPENSATION Voluntary Deferred Compensation Plan through TIAA-CREF.

    HOLIDAYS 14 paid holidays per year including one floating holiday.

    Shift personnel shall be given credit for fourteen (14) days pay per calendar year in lieu of holiday credit. Employees in these assignments receive this pay in lieu of having designated days on which holidays occur in order to facilitate scheduling. The value of one (1) holiday shall be (8) hours, and shift employees will receive a total value of 9.33 hours of pay each month for holiday in lieu (112 holiday hours divided by 12 months).

    VACATION CREDIT Employees with 4 years of prior public agency experience may request to accrue at rate of 120 hours.

    SICK LEAVE Employees accumulate eight (8) hours per month. Remaining balances rollover each year with no cap.

    SICK LEAVE CASH OUT / CALPERS SERVICE CREDIT Employees retiring or separating are eligible for sick leave cash out of 75% of balance, up to a maximum of four hundred eighty (480) hours; upon retirement, remaining sick leave hours may be converted to CalPERS service credit.

    UNIFORMS The City follows the quartermaster system. All Uniform, equipment and dry cleaning fees are paid for by the department.

    LONGEVITY Regular full time employees who have been employed by the City for eight (8) years shall be paid two and one half percent (2.5%) above their regular base pay. Regular full time employees who have been employed by the City for ten (10) years shall be paid five percent (5%) above their regular base pay. Regular full time employees who have been employed by the City for twelve (12) years shall be paid seven and one-half percent (7.5%) above their regular base pay.
