ABOUT THE POSITION
This classification is responsible to organize, direct and supervise all aquatic programs as related to the management and operation of the swimming pool facility to which he/she may be assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Recreation Supervisor, and, in his/her absence, from the Parks & Recreation Director. Exercises supervision over part-time and temporary staff including: Swim Coaches, Assistant Swim Coaches, and Lifeguards.
Pool Mangers and Assistant Pool Managers coordinate to provide direct supervision of the Aquatic Center and Aquatic Center staff. This position is also responsible for the supervision of the instruction of all levels in swimming lessons and for the supervision of the Aquatic Center participants.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Acts as a manager over the operation of a swimming pool facility.
Organizes, directs and supervises all phases of aquatic programs at the swimming pool facility to which he/she is assigned.
Maintains lesson organizing/scheduling, registrations, public relations, coordination, and evaluation of all staff.
Checks and documents pool chemicals and performs tasks related to keeping chemicals within the Sacramento County Health recommended levels.
May provide training to, demonstrate skills to, and assist in the tasks of subordinate personnel.
Assists in evaluation of the performance of subordinate aquatics programs personnel.
Keeps employee records as required for program results.
Maintains pool records and reports.
Advises the Recreation Supervisor of maintenance conditions and supply needs.
Prevents accidents by enforcement of swimming pool rules and State Ordinances governing the operation of the facility and conduct of patrons.
Performs necessary actions during emergency situations.
Renders First Aid to individuals when necessary.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Basics of supervision and training.

Ability to:
- Act as a supervisor, provide training to, and demonstrate skills to subordinate employees.
- Carry out life saving techniques and procedures in a competent manner.
- Perform First Aid for public safety personnel.
- Perform professional rescuer CPR.
- Be responsible and dependable.
- Communicate clearly with patrons, department employees, and the general public.
- Understand and practice good customer relations.
- Understand and carry out verbal and written orders and instructions.
- Meet physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties, including activities involving stooping, bending, and squatting; lifting or moving persons and objects of up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Arrive at assigned place of work on time in a dependable manner; work varied hours, including weekends and holidays.
Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the City. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent to graduation from high school
Two (2) years of experience in the aquatics field which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a Pool Manager/Assistant Pool Manager.
- Possession of an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training Certification which includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid or equivalent.
- Possession of Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certificate (must obtain upon appointment and retain for life of employment)
- Must obtain Title 22 First Aid Certification, within one (1) year of date of hire
Special Requirements:
Must be at least eighteen (18) years old at time of appointment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to work indoors in an office setting/recreational facility or to perform required work out doors including: frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and walking on uneven surfaces; lifting up to 40 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; use of standard office equipment and/or recreation equipment including a computer and handheld devices; constant use of overall vision; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone and/or radio.. Must be willing to work out doors in all weather conditions with possible exposure to loud noise, traffic, and potentially hazardous conditions such as exposure to chemicals, fumes and other environmental substances
