ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Galt is now accepting applications for

Parks Maintenance Worker I.

ADDITIONAL PAY (UPON ASSIGNMENT AND ELIGIBILITY): 
  • Medical-in-lieu - Employees who waive the City's medical coverage shall receive $200 per month for employee only, $350 per month for employee plus one, and $500 per month for family. 
  • Incentives- up to 2.5% - 10%
  • Longevity Pay - beginning at 15 years of service - 5%; 20 years of service 7.5%.
  • Bilingual Pay - $50 per month.

BENEFITS:
  • Tuition Reimbursement - Up to $4,000 per fiscal year.
  • Holiday Pay -  14 holidays; thirteen (13) paid holidays and one (1) floating holiday. Thirteen (13) fixed holidays observed: New Year’s Day, MLK Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Cesar Chavez Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
  • Vacation Leave- 80 hours per year; after 4 years- 120 hours; after 10 years- 160 hours; after 15 years- 200 hours and after 22 years- 220 hours.
  • Vacation Credit - Those with 4 years of prior public agency experience may request to accrue at rate of 120 hours.
  • Vacation Cash Out- Cash out up to forty (40) hours vacation per year.
  • Sick Leave- 96 hours per year.
  • Heath Insurance- City pays a generous portion of the CalPERS medical premium (9 options), City pays 100% for dental and vision premiums.
  • Life Insurance- City paid $50,000 policy and $1,500 policy for dependents.
  • Long Term Disability - City paid policy-benefit is up to 60% of base salary.
  • EAP- Confidential employee assistance plan.

NON-EXEMPT

Under direct or general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of landscaping and park sites, including sports fields, open spaces, landscapes, playgrounds and equipment, irrigation systems and controllers, and weed abatement; provides assistance with set-up and removal of equipment and facilities at special events; uses and operates a variety of manual and power tools and light to heavy power driven equipment; and performs related work as required.
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED 
Receives direct or general supervision from the Parks Maintenance Supervisor or Parks Superintendent.  Exercises no direct supervision over staff.  May give general direction to a small work crew.
 
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry-level for the Parks Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents work initially under direct supervision and receive detailed instructions and training on assignments. Incumbents generally work within an established framework of set procedures in performing assigned tasks.  As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence.  Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.  Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern.  Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Participates in the work of a crew that maintains, repairs, and cleans parks, facilities, and other City rights-of-way, including the trimming, seeding, planting, weeding, watering, irrigation checks and repairs, pruning and cultivation of trees, shrubs, and other landscaped areas.
  • Performs shrub and flower bed maintenance, including planting, watering, fertilizing, and maintaining landscaped areas such as bushes, trees, flowers, and shrubs; performs weed abatement using a chemical sprayer.
  • Trims and prunes bushes, trees, and shrubs to provide clearance of sidewalks and signs, as well as to ensure the continued health of the bush, tree, or shrub.
  • Removes fallen trees, stumps, fallen limbs, and related debris resulting from storm damage and general conditions.
  • Monitors City swimming pool system; verifies pool chemistry and adds chemicals or adjusts system as necessary to meet standards; ensures the pool remains clean and safe for public usage.
  • Picks up and removes debris from parks; maintains athletic fields and landscape areas throughout the City.
  • Maintains, replaces, repairs, and installs, recreation equipment in parks.
  • Prepares department memos, presentations, and reports as needed.
  • Maintains accurate logs, reports, and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
  • Receives and acts upon complaints, referrals, and concerns from the public; responds to and performs work in emergency situations as required.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Knowledge of:
  • Basic principles, practices, tools, and materials as they relate to the maintenance and repair of infrastructure, facilities, systems, and appurtenances similar to those in a municipal environment.
  • Basic mathematics.
  • Basic computer software related to work.
  • English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
  • Safe driving rules and practices.
     
 Ability to: 
  • Perform semi-skilled modification, maintenance, and repair work to City facilities, swimming pools, park sites, and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine materials and supplies required for repair.
  • Use and maintain tools and equipment related to the work skillfully and safely.
  • Make accurate arithmetic calculations.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance.
  • Learn applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written reports of work performed.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
  • Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone or radio, and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
 
Equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of experience in park construction, maintenance, or repair work.
 
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Possession of Adult, Child, & Infant First Aid/CPR/AED Certification, within one (1) year of date of hire.

Licenses and certificates listed below are desirable, but not required at the time of appointment.  However, at the discretion of the City and depending upon business necessity, certain persons in this class may be required to obtain any of the below listed licenses, certificates, or specialized education and training within a specified timeframe. 

  • Possession of a Pool Operator Certification (CPO).
  • Possession of Playground Safety Inspector Certification.  
  • Possession of Pesticide Qualified Applicator Certification. 
  • Possession of Tree Trimming Certification.  
  • Possession of Horticulture Certification – Turf Grass.   
  • Possession of Horticulture Certification – Landscape Management.  
  • Possession of Electrical Technologies Certification. 
  • Possession of Irrigation Technician Certification.
  • Possession of Traffic Control Technician Certification from American Traffic Safety Services Association.
  • Possession of Backflow Device Tester Certification. 
     
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites; vision to read printed material and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.  The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards.  Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment.  Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites.  Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
 
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspaces, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.  Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives, and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background investigation, including fingerprinting.  Must be available for shift work, standby assignments, and work emergency overtime as required.
