Description
The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Seasonal Public Works Maintenance. This position is required to perform various tasks within the Department of Public Works (Solid Waste/Recycling, Street, & Traffic). Tasks include but are not limited to cleaning, organizing, and sorting recycled material, vegetation control maintenance, painting, and other tasks.
- This position has a maximum of 1,000 working hours per year.
Examples of Duties
- Sorting recycled material and keeping a clean and safe workplace
- Painting, organizing, and assisting with different Traffic Division tasks
- Mowing, weeding, and general maintenance of City property and public right-of-way.
- Maintains records involving vehicle maintenance and daily activities.
- Always follows Federal and State safety rules and procedures.
- Maintains equipment, vehicles, tools, supplies, facilities, and grounds.
- Applies chemicals related to the department’s vegetation control, using proper safety procedures.
- Follows safety policies and practices as established by Department Head.
- Subject to the Department’s Random Drug/Alcohol testing program.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Skills in driving and operating tractors and mowers. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures. Ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Ability to perform physical labor under varying weather conditions. Ability to communicate with City employees and the public.
Education, Certification, and Experience: A valid Kansas Class C Driver's License is required. Applicant must make available drug testing history and pass a drug test.
Supplemental Information
Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather. Most work is performed outdoors, i.e., moderate to extreme cold and heat, snow, rain, hail, sleet, high and gusting winds, dust, and dry conditions. Surfaces: Includes, but is not limited to, dirt, sand, gravel, concrete, asphalt, grass, and wood.
Physical Characteristics: Includes, but is not limited to, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, holding, standing, walking, jumping, sitting, driving, and the ability to lift 70 pounds and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
