Organizational Responsibilities
This is an entry level Class in the typing and clerical series. Applicants for positions in this Class are not expected to have clerical experience; rather, a high degree of clerical aptitude and basic typing skills are considered necessary for an employee working in this class. Employees in this Class are normally assigned to offices where supervision and training are received from a more senior clerical or secretarial employee.Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in typing and office procedures. Experience in public contact and switchboard duties is highly desirable.
Knowledge and Abilities
Must have knowledge of modern office methods, procedures and equipment and general knowledge of arithmetic and proper English; must be able to speak clearly and distinctly with good voice modulation; ability to meet the public with tact and courtesy; to learn what services are performed by each department and the location of employees within the City; to spell correctly and use proper English; to perform a variety of clerical work; to make comparisons and computations quickly and accurately; to have skill in indexing and filing; to work cooperatively with others; to have a high degree of clerical aptitude and a liking for office work.
Skills
Must be able to type at a rate of 40 words per minute and have the ability to use a switchboard, calculator, personal computer and word processor. Must have computer skills in Word. Skill in Outlook and Excel or Spreadsheet is highly desirable. Bilingual ability is highly desirable (Gardena is a multi-ethnic community with a variety of languages.)
***Candidates must provide the City with a current typing certificate (acquired within the last 6 months) indicating a typing speed of at least 40 net words per minute (nwpm). Typing certification must be proctored either virtually or in person.

Physical demands include sitting for long periods of time, standing, kneeling, bending, twisting, reaching and grasping in the performance of duties.

Candidates must pass all examinations to be placed on the eligible list.
