Deputy Chief of Police / Senior Commander

The Deputy Police Chief assists the Police Chief with planning, directing, managing, supervising and overseeing the activities and operations of the Police Department. Provides input and feedback on management issues including personnel, budgeting, long and short-term planning, technology and equipment, policies and procedures and community affairs. Work is performed with wide latitude for independent judgment subject to established policies and governing laws, rules, and regulations. This position provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Police Chief and functions as the Acting Police Chief in the absence of the Police Chief.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications : Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Criminology or equivalent field, Masters Degree in an appropriate field is preferred; at least ten (10) ten years of service as a sworn law enforcement officer including at least three years of administrative and supervisory experience beyond first line supervisor.; graduation from a law enforcement command school (e.g. FBI National Academy, SMIP or SPI) or similar credential preferred, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required, knowledge, skills and abilities. Requires possession of a valid driver's license and a good driving record. Must be Kansas C-Post Certified or able to gain certification and able to maintain a proficiency in firearms as required C-Post standards. Must successfully pass a polygraph exam, police background check, mental health screen, drug screen and physical exam prior to employment. Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting : strength and mobility to operate a motor vehicle and take command at an incident or emergency scene : strength and stamina to lift and carry 25 pounds; vision to observe emergency scenes and investigation and to read printed material and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups and over the telephone / and or radio. Starting salary based on qualifications.
