General Definition of Work

Performs difficult skilled trades work maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Fleet Services Supervisor or the Assistant Division Manager of Fleet Services.

Essential Functions / Duties

Tunes engines using standard testing equipment, including scan tools, performs general electronic diagnosis on gas and diesel engines

Performs selected repairs and replacement on diesel driven equipment

Repairs or replaces engine components such as fuel related parts, including injectors, pumps, camshafts as well as cooling system related parts including thermostats, water pumps and radiators

  • Installing radiator hoses, belts and other components;

Performs major and minor engine repair and replacement work

Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies

Does diversified electrical work on automotive equipment, such as diagnoses electrical shorts, installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights and repairing generators, alternators, and starters

Performs repairs and diagnostics to light and heavy duty brakes, air and hydraulic

Major and minor suspension repairs and adjustments

Manual and automatic transmission repairs and replacement automotive and truck

Refaces or replaces brake drums and rotors as needed. relines brakes, overhauls calipers, master and wheel cylinders

Installs clutches, u-joints as well as other drive train related parts

Overhauls and repairs fuel induction systems on gas and diesel powered engines

Takes down, repairs and reassembles air compressors, pump and related equipment

Cleaning and replacing spark plugs

Checks alignment of wheels

  • Installs rings and bearings, pistons, liners and effects proper adjustment;
  • Manufactures special apparatus, designs and fabricates special parts

    Overhauls and repairs tools

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment; thorough knowledge and skill in the use of shop tools, such as drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines, welding equipment; skill in the use and the operations of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work; ability to diagnose the more common defects in the engines and bodies of automotive equipment; ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts; ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.

    Education / Experience :

    Graduation from high school or equivalent and extensive progressive experience in repairing automotive and power driven equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

    Possession of ASE Certified Master Technician or Master Medium / Heavy Truck Technician within six (6) moths of hire.

    Obtain a North Carolina Class C Commercial driver's license within six (6) months of hire.

    Obtain a North Carolina State Inspector's license within six months of hire.

    Complete NIMS IS 700 training within one year of hire.

    C. Stooping : Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

    D. Kneeling : Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

    E. Crouching : Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

    F. Crawling : Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.

    G. Reaching : Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

    H. Standing : Particularly for sustained periods of time.

    I. Walking : Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

    J. Pushing : Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

    K. Pulling : Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

    L. Lifting : Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.

    M. Fingering : Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.

    N. Grasping : Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

    O . Feeling : Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips.

    P. Talking : Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

    Q . Hearing : Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal spoken word levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when making fine adjustments on machined parts.

    R. Repetitive Motions : Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and / or fingers.

    2. The physical requirements of this position :

    A. Heavy Work : Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
