General Definition of Work
Performs responsible skilled work in the repair, maintenance and care of the City's parks, City facilities, beautification areas, athletic fields and related structures and equipment; Performs rough carpentry and painting in the repair, maintenance and construction of ground structures and equipment; Does related work in Park and facility maintenance as required.
Work is performed under regular supervision. Supervision may be exercised over a small crew or unskilled helpers.
Essential Functions / Duties
- Participates in the skilled and semi-skilled grounds, parks, facility, and field maintenance; 20%
- Performs various duties associated with field preparation; 20%
- Operates a variety of mowers in grass cutting operations; 20%
- Cuts, prunes and trims trees, shrubs, hedges and maintains landscape areas; 15%
- Performs rough carpentry and painting in the repair, maintenance and construction of ground structures and equipment;10%
- Assists in repairing irrigation and small equipment; 5%
- Operates light automotive or power equipment in connection with above tasks; 5%
- Runs errands, picks up and delivers supplies and materials. Assists in all areas of Recreation Maintenance as required. Performs other tasks as required. 5%
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in grounds maintenance; general knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools and techniques of the standard building trades; good knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to use common hand tools; ability to operate simple machinery and equipment; good physical condition.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school, and experience in grounds maintenance and horticulture work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT :
Ability to push, pull, or lift 50 lbs.; manual dexterity required with ability to operate mowers, tractors, and other lawn equipment in a recreational environment such as an athletic field or park area.
The physical activity of this position includes :
Climbing : Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and / or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
Balancing : Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or couching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
Stooping : Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
Kneeling : Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
Crouching : Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
Crawling : Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
Reaching : Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Standing : Particularly for sustained periods of time.
Walking : Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
Pushing : Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
Pulling : Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
Lifting : Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
