The Building Caretaker is the facility & staff supervisor for the weekend. Assists in the lobby, museum and back country areas when needed; Assists other departments & is the point person for volunteers, and the contact for visiting partners (City, Exhibit Fabricators, tradesmen, etc). Responsible for maintaining a safe environment for Museum employees & visitors. Will work weekends, holidays, and nights, as needed. This position reports directly to the Operations and Security Manager.

Opens/disarms the facility; Turns on and off all computers, A/V equipment, and other mechanical devices related to each exhibition; Last to leave to arm and lock building; Provides daily closing and security check of all buildings; Provide assistance to customers and museum visitors; Required to interact with the public regarding the museum, its exhibitions, museum programs and activities on general questions; Assist with birthday party patrons and insure the birthday party room is prepared for each session; Point of contact for volunteers and staff persons; Assists with setting-up and taking down equipment for regular and special programs; Performs essential custodial duties to insure clean and sanitary conditions in public areas of the museum to include restrooms, lobby, hallways, exhibit spaces, and grounds; Safeguards staff, visitors, exhibits, and equipment; Assists with special events by working as traffic control and setting up and taking down event equipment; Responsible for security and maintenance of buildings and grounds, access and key control associated with security equipment, including CCTV systems, two-way radios and specialized security devices; Works with supervisor to implement safety guidelines and City safety policies; Performs regular safety/security checks of all monitored locations, including Gem cases, Dioramas, Bark Hut, Cave, etc.; Completes and files accurate incident and accident forms and reports of security matters and provides information from such files to appropriate officials as directed; Other tasks as assigned.
Excellent customer service skills are required to work with a broad range of visitors that come to the Schiele Museum of Natural History. Must be customer service oriented and possess strong interaction skills to enhance the visitor experience and to provide information regarding the exhibitions on display. Must demonstrate strong leadership qualities and problem solving skills as well as the ability to process information, situations, and requests quickly and effectively. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, tools and equipment needed to be effective in operating the museum throughout the course of a normal operational day. Must work well with other museum staff to provide the highest level of customer service and security required for standard Museum practice and to ensure a safe and attractive facility for the public and the staff.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or community college. Experience in customer service, public safety, security, or building maintenance is required. Must possess a valid driver's license with acceptable driving history. Drug Screening Required.
Incumbent will be required to walk the museum building and grounds on a regular basis.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
The physical activity of this position includes:
Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
