Essential Functions:
· Directs haulers to designated tipping sites and oversees solid waste disposal at landfill sites or bale facility.
· Operates a variety of heavy equipment, including compactors, backhoes, front-end loaders, tractors, bowl dozers, motor graders, and specialized landfill machinery equipped with GPS monitoring.
· Conducts on-site inspections of incoming waste, ensuring compliance with disposal regulations.
· Maintains landfill operations, including daily waste disposal and closure-related activities.
· Completes required reports related to landfill or bale facility operations.
· Assists in compiling and reporting data for State and Federal regulatory agencies.
· Provides information to the public regarding disposal procedures.
· Performs clerical and administrative tasks related to landfill operations.
Peripheral Functions:
· Assists with landfill surveying work.
· Performs routine maintenance and upkeep on landfill equipment.
· Ensures general maintenance and custodial duties at landfill sites.
· Participates in snow removal operations when necessary, which may require evening, night, and weekend hours.
· Purchases necessary supplies and materials.
· Opens and closes landfill site, ensuring proper waste coverage.
· Removes litter from landfill fences and surrounding areas as needed.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
· May assist in other City departments as needed.
Qualifications:
1. Education and Experience:
· High School Diploma or equivalent.
· Minimum (1) year of equipment operation or landfill experience, or an equivalent combination of education experience.
2. Necessary Knowledge and Skills:
· Strong understanding of heavy equipment operating principles.
· Familiarity with hazards and safety precautions related to heavy equipment operations.
· Working knowledge of sanitary landfill operations and safety procedures.
· Ability to accurately screen incoming waste.
· Competency in following oral and written instructions.
· Effective verbal and written communication skills.
· Capability to work under adverse conditions with a focus on safety.
· Strong interpersonal skills to establish effective working relationships.
· Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and operate various equipment in varying weather conditions.
3. Special Requirements:
· Valid NE Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker and air brake endorsements.
· Must be 18 years of age or older.
· Participate in FMCSA’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
· State certification as a landfill operator/waste screener, or ability to obtain within 6 months.
Tools & Equipment Used:
· A variety of heavy equipment, including compactors, backhoes, front-end loaders, tractors, bowl dozers, motor graders, and specialized landfill machinery equipped with GPS monitoring.
· Miscellaneous hand and power tools.
· Detection devices, mobile or portable radios and phones.

Supervisory Responsibility: May train Solid Waste Handlers or other Heavy Equipment Operators on equipment use, including dozers, scrapers, excavators, grinders, and compactors.
