What are the responsibilities and job description for the Farm Park Seasonal Worker position at City of Germantown?
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Under supervision of the Farm Park Coordinator, provide assistance in the daily operations and maintenance of all farming, gardening, landscaping, agricultural activities, and general land management operations; care of any livestock or animals; and programs/events implementation and rental support as required at the Bobby Lanier Farm Park as well as Oaklawn Garden as assigned.
START DATE: March 3, 2025 - June 30, 2025 with the option of working through July 28, 2025. Maximum of 25 hours per week.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Participate in and assist the Farm Park Coordinator with a wide range of duties associated with the maintenance of the Farm Park under the direction of the Park and Recreation Department.
2. Assist in the seeding, transplanting, cultivation, management of fertility/soil, harvesting vegetables, herbs, flowers, and other crops using organic practices.
3. Assist in the management of basic farm elements such as compost, gardens, animals, etc.
4. Assist in the implementation of an organic growing plan that produces high quality natural farm produce for community garden members.
5. Assist the Farm Park Coordinator in ensuring all farm activities adhere to safety regulations and standards according to the Safety and Risk Management Plan.
6. Harvest, clean, divide, and distribute produce to garden members and/or designated non-profit recipients.
7. Assist volunteers in training, managing, and supervising volunteers on the Farm.
8. Assist visitors and guests to the Farm Park.
9. Assist in supplementing site mowing, edging, and blowing as needed or assigned.
10. Create and maintain an aesthetically pleasing farm site so as to attract renters and leave a good impression for park visitors, including effective weed management practices.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Complete other duties as assigned by the Farm Park Operations Coordinator in relation to farming, gardening, or landscaping.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques commonly used in maintenance and repair activities as related to assigned area in park maintenance.
- Knowledge of gardening, farming, landscaping, agriculture, and land management.
- Knowledge of standard safety practices and precautions applicable to tasks performed and equipment operated.
- Skill in communicating in person on a one-on-one basis and in writing for the purpose of obtaining, clarifying or giving information.
- Skill in operating tools and equipment used in park maintenance.
- Ability to read and understand plans, operation manuals and chemical application instructions.
- Ability to follow and understand written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to effectively train and lead subordinate employees in assigned work projects.
- Physical ability to perform essential job duties.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School graduate or GED and three years general maintenance experience or any combination of education, training, and experience providing the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform essential job functions.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Majority of work is outdoors in all weather conditions. Work requires lifting heavy objects, as much as50 lbs. a distance of four feet from the ground. Work assignments may require stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling in awkward positions and standing for extended periods of time. Some tasks may expose workers to harmful materials or chemicals, fumes, odors, loud noise, or dangerous machinery. Some tasks may require working from great heights. Must wear all safety equipment in accordance with safety regulations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid Commercial Driver’s License.
