Performs intermediate maintenance and repair work, including routine mechanical work and minor overhauls to various fleet equipment.
This is the second of a four-level classification series of fleet technicians with progressively responsible duties.

A Fleet Technician is assigned to one of the following assignments:
Automotive Assignment
- Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on light-duty and medium-duty fleet equipment such
- Fleet equipment includes various types of vehicles, including police patrol, passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, medium-duty trucks, motorcycles, and landscaping equipment.
- Repair and maintain all vehicle systems, including engine, transmission, driveline, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical, and HVAC.
- Performs major and minor repairs and maintenance on a variety of light-duty passenger vehicles, police patrol, medium-duty trucks, motorcycles, or landscaping equipment
Heavy Equipment Assignment
- Repairs and preventative maintenance on various gasoline and diesel-powered heavy-duty equipment such as solid waste trucks, tractors, heavy-duty trucks, and fire apparatus.
- Repairs and maintains all vehicle systems, including engine, transmission, driveline, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical, HVAC, and hydraulic systems.
- Performs major and minor repairs and maintenance on a variety of heavy-duty gasoline and diesel equipment, solid waste trucks, construction equipment, bucket trucks, backhoe/loaders, street sweepers, and fire apparatus.
- Depending on assignment, performs major and minor repairs and maintenance on a variety of light-duty passenger vehicles, police patrol, medium-duty trucks, motorcycles, or landscaping equipment.
- Depending on assignment, performs major and minor repairs and maintenance on a variety of heavy-duty gasoline and diesel equipment, solid waste trucks, construction equipment, bucket trucks, backhoe/loaders, street sweepers, and fire apparatus.
- Troubleshoots various computerized systems using scan tools and web-based systems to diagnose and execute repairs.
- Performs repairs according to service manuals, schematics, and hydraulic flow charts.
- May mentor other technicians.
- Consults with staff to determine parts and supplies needed to conduct repairs.
- Estimates the cost and time of repairs and determines the most cost-effective methods.
- Test drives all applications to ensure all repairs and maintenance have been completed.
- Makes emergency service calls for all disabled vehicles and equipment.
- Depending on assignment, fabricates and welds minor and major projects.
- Orders supplies and materials and logs them into inventory or their work order.
- Performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition.
- Keeps work area and shop clean.
- Uses and disposes of hazardous materials according to established guidelines.
- Required to be on occasional standby on a rotation schedule.
- Operates city vehicles.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of the mechanical trades, including the use and care of tools and equipment
- Occupational hazards and safety procedures associated with mechanical maintenance work, industrial electricity, hydraulics, and heavy equipment
- Welding and welding techniques
- Proper use and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with established guidelines
Ability to:
- Take direction, receive training, and develop technical skills
- Determine and correct causes of vehicle and equipment malfunctions and defects
- Mentor other fleet technicians
- Interpret technical manuals and related diagrams and instructions
- Read and comprehend Materials Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in the work environment
- Estimate the time and cost of repairs
- Diagnose defects in all vehicles and equipment, including troubleshooting for minor or major repairs
- Determine mechanical repair needs
- Prepare and maintain all related records and reports
- Work cooperatively with others
- Communicate unsafe conditions or accidents and injuries promptly to the supervisor
- Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards
- Communicate and use interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisor, the public, etc., to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
- Operate city vehicles
Special Requirements
- Valid Arizona Driver's License required.
- Required to workday or evening shifts as assigned.
- Work standby occasionally for holidays and callback shifts as needed.
- Must obtain air conditioning repair certification within 60 days of hire.
- Ability to obtain emissions testing certification within 6 months of hire.
- Must provide personal tools.
- Some assignments will also require a Class "A" or Class "B" Commercial Driver's license required at the time of application or upon hire, and passenger, tanker, and hazardous waste endorsements are required within 60 days of hire.
- This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.

Work involves occasional lifting of parts and equipment up to 100 pounds, extensive walking, standing, and bending. Enters, exits, and operates city vehicles; depending on area of assignment, may enter, exit, and operate vehicles which require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Exposure to seasonal weather conditions, exhaust fumes, chemical fumes, high noise levels, residential and commercial waste, acid, oil, grease and hazardous materials and equipment. Hazards may be reduced through the exercise of safety precautions. Enters, exits, and operates city vehicles.
