About Us:The City of Glendale Parks and Recreation Department is split into two distinct areas:

  • The Parks Division manages and maintains all public parks, open spaces, trails, storm water retention basins, landscaping at municipal facilities and Thunderbird Conservation Park. The Division is also responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety and security of park and facility use.
  • The Recreation Division offers opportunities to enhance the social, physical, mental and economic health of our community through a variety of diverse recreation programs and facilities. Recreation programs and events are held at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, the Glendale Adult Center, Historic Sahuaro Ranch, the five community centers and at basketball, tennis, skate courts and other recreation facilities throughout the city.

The Role

First review of applications for Summer 2025 will be March 20th, 2025.

Interview Day is Saturday, March 29th, 2025. During the Interview Day, candidates will be tested on a wide range of skills in water as well as on land for hiring. Anyone who applies should keep this day open as it may be the only interview opportunity. Any candidates whom are invited and miss March 29th skills test may not get another hiring opportunity. Invitations for interviews will be sent by March 27th, 2025. Interview offerings may be limited depending on the needs of the city.Â

 Notifications of job offers for those that interview will occur by April 11th, 2025.

 The City of Glendale Aquatics Center is looking to fill Temporary Aquatics Lifeguard positions.  Potential employees must be available during the entire summer aquatics season of mid-May to beginning of September, we also have a year-round aquatics operation.

 Required training sessions for those hired as Aquatics Staff will be held as needed.  The listed positions for summer positions are up to 40 hours per week for up to 14 weeks with no benefits as well as a possible opportunity to work up to 20 hours per week for up to the remaining 38 weeks in the year with no benefits. The summer jobs will be performed at both our Rose Lane Aquatics Center (5003 West Marlette Ave, 85301) as well as our Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center (5600 West Union Hills Drive, 85308). If selected to work winter lifeguarding from August 2025 through May 2025, that location will be at our Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center (5600 West Union Hills Drive, 85308). Staff are required to work at either location as assigned. You are hired to the City of Glendale Aquatics Staff, not to a specific pool.

Aquatics positions within the City of Glendale require certifications BEFORE hiring.

City of Glendale offerings for Lifeguard Training for new Lifeguards typically occurs between February 2025 to March 2025, but we do accept trainings from other entities that teach Lifeguarding from American Red Cross or StarGuard. American Red Cross is preferred.

This position is

  • FLSA non-exempt, and will earn overtime for any hours worked over 40 in a week.
  • This position has an hourly rate of $25.00.

Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, Pool Manager, Assistant Manager, and the Head Guard the Temporary Aquatics Lifeguard will:Â

  • Be responsible for the day-to-day safe pool operations. Â
  • Be responsible for keeping certifications up-to-date and valid in lifeguarding, CPR, and first aid training as well as public safety and rescues. Â
  • Perform rescues and/or maintain crowd control during emergency situations by responding quickly and calmly. Â
  • Maintain high standards of safety and skills/in-service training. Â
  • Be familiar with and implement pool rules and regulations. Â
  • Exhibit a friendly, critical details, and concise communication skills verbally and written.
  • Maintain welcoming, firm, and consistent customer service practices with staff and patrons. Â
  • Be knowledgeable and able to communicate details of City of Glendale Aquatics programs to patrons as well as other staff members.
  • Monitor own schedules, hour limits, and report schedule adjustments to management as needed. Â
  • Monitor facility functions to prevent accidents, drowning, and near drowning as well as report any oddities that should be addressed by management and / or maintenance. Â
  • Monitor the activities of swimmers and patrons to detect and address problem areas. Â
  • Perform rescue techniques and render first aid during emergency and non-emergency situations. Â
  • Complete accurate and honest daily / weekly timecards, hours worked reports in MUNIS, accident reports, incident reports and inventory reports on time. Â
  • Do the custodial cleaning of pool facility, including but not limited to restrooms, changing rooms, staff areas, decks, the pool, etc. Â
  • Maintain adequate endurance and fitness through swimming and exercise. Â
  • Â Assure the timely opening and closing of the facility. Â
  • Become familiar with city rules and regulations for employees and patrons and be able to communicate these rules and regulations. Â
  • Know the proper use of job-related tools such as a whistle, megaphone, rescue tube, and first aid equipment, among other tools.
  • Only if Cash Handling Trained through the City of Glendale, employee will handle money in a safe and accurate manner and provides exceptional guest services.
  • Takes, reads, records, reports problems and understands pool chemistry tests.
  • Reports maintenance problems to Aquatics Coordinator, Assistant to the Aquatics Coordinator and possibly the Aquatics Maintenance Staff. May be asked to do some pool maintenance duties, for example, vacuuming the pool, placing the aerator or automatic vacuum in the water and turning it on and ensure it is working.
  • Work at any City of Glendale Aquatics Location as assigned. Working at Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center as well as Rose Lane Aquatics Center is required. Working at city events and special locations, for example, splashpads or after school centers may be required of staff as well.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Applicants are preferred to be at least 16 years old as of May 2025. Applicants must be at least 15 years of age to be lifeguard certified. Â Must have an American Red Cross Lifeguard & First Aid Training R. 24 certification that does not expire before September 2025 and American Red Cross CPR & AED for the Professional Rescuer R. 24 that does not expire before September 2025.Â

  • If applicant possesses a current StarGuard certificate and can properly perform skills, they will be considered for hire. If hired, the applicant will be "crossed-over" to the American Red Cross certificates listed above.
  • American Red Cross Certifications are preferred.Â
  • Completed at least two years of high school preferred.Â
  • Previous work history in Aquatic Safety environment and / or customer service environment preferred.Â
  • Applicants are preferred to have a valid Arizona Driver's License.Â
  • Fluency to read, write, and speak English is required. Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish is preferred. Â Â

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Â Maintain American Red Cross swimming skills. Â

  • Sufficient clarity of hearing with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern emergency situations.

  • This position is subject to extreme heat and cold for periods of more than one hour and, subject to noise, sun exposure and extreme weather conditions.
