There is currently an opening for a position to support mobile Glendale Library, Arts & Culture (GLAC) services with a newly acquired electric bookmobile. This role will be assigned to the Library Connection@Adams Square and the Pacific Park Branch Library teams, providing support for daily branch services while also assisting with outreach primarily to schools and community organizations. This position may be reassigned to another library section as needed in the future.

This para-professional classification performs a range of public service duties including assisting Librarians with basic reference services, collection development and programming.

Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.

Works with a diverse community and staff, valuing inclusion, diversity, equity, and antiracism and applies those values to library programs and services.

Supports mobile outreach services and serves as the lead bookmobile driver.

Assists with planning mobile outreach services, including planning and presenting programs, helping assess community needs, scheduling site visits, coordinating logistics, supporting program delivery, collection maintenance and managing circulation functions.

Assists with the implementation and presentation of library programs and services for children (ages 0-12) and their families.

Assists in instructing children and caregivers about digital literacy, research skills, and information gathering.
 
Serve in a Person in Charge capacity as needed to handle security, daily operational needs and facility issues to ensure the safety of staff and patrons.

Assists patrons of all ages in every aspect of utilizing the library.
 
Assists the public in accessing information and library resources.  
 
Assists patrons with circulation functions and financial transactions.
 
Monitors cash funds, receives monies, makes out receipts, reconciles and balances accounts or statements, and performs mathematic computations with a calculator, personal computer, or manually.
 
Provides some level of reference and research assistance.
 
Assists with the library collections arrangement, organization and presentation.
 
Represents the library in public forums including providing school visits, classroom talks, orientation sessions and library tours and community events.  
 
Plans and implements programs including, but not limited to, storytelling, films, arts and crafts, recitals, gallery exhibitions, training workshops, literacy services and other activities. 
 
Supports programming, tools, technology and activities in a MakerSpace environment and other innovative spaces, such as 3D printing, design, electronics, robotics, coding and other STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) programming, audio, video and photo production and editing, sewing, and other equipment housed in these areas. 
 
Assists with library event programming and other services; assists with rentals and the set-up of auditorium and meeting rooms for special events.

Assists with traffic/crowd control during large community events.
 
Assists with facility maintenance functions, including creating and tracking Facility Service Requests (FSR's) as assigned.
 
Orders, receives, and invoices library materials.
 
Provide technology instruction and troubleshooting assistance on a variety of technology devices, tools and software.
 
Initiates inter library loans, conducts online material and information searches, produces subject bibliographies and reading lists, selects and maintains library materials.
 
Maintains currency of professional knowledge by attending professional meetings and staff conferences.  

Keeps abreast on trends in publishing, automation and public library practices.
 
Participates in staff meetings and system oriented planning sessions.
 
Maintains records and statistics, as well as prepares associated reports.
 
Tracks inventory of office supplies as assigned.  Completes forms for ordering materials or supplies and follows up on delivery of ordered materials.
 
Directs clerical and part-time staff when the unit supervisor is absent.
 
May be called upon to drive a vehicle or travel on City business as necessary. May be asked to drive City van to deliver and pick up books and materials and/or drive library outreach vehicle for community events as needed. 
 
Assists with security to ensure safety of library patrons and other staff members.
 
Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe efficient manner.
 
Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.

Experience

One year of experience in a library setting or a related field.  

Experience in a public library setting desirable.

Experience in conducting library outreach desirable.


Education

Two years of college level course work or degree/certificate in a Library Technician or Library Assistant program.   

Bachelor’s degree is desirable.


License(s)/Certification(s)
Valid Class C California driver's license.
 
Desirable Qualifications:
Ability to read, write and/or speak in a language other than English.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:

Exceptional customer service practices.
Automated online catalogs and circulation systems.  
Basic mathematics including ability to figure discounts and percentages.   
Cataloging and filing rules and relevant print and online resources.
Standard literature and reference sources.  
 
Working knowledge of:
Library of Congress subject headings and the Dewey Decimal System.   
 
Skill in:
Creative problem solving.
Use of automated library systems.
Use of library and general office equipment.
Use of personal computers and tablet devices, as well as associated software and applications.
Use of audio and visual media components for events.
 

Ability to:
Provide exceptional customer service to all employees and vendors.

Assist in maintaining and track employee schedules as needed.
Assist in training newly hired employees.
Be flexible in all work related situations.
Communicate with and relate to a diverse clientele.
Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet the standards of performance by the end of the probationary period.  
Effectively communicate orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain smooth working relationships and resolve interpersonal conflicts.
Lift heavy library materials weighting approximately 20 lbs.
Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct.
Operate a variety of equipment including personal computers, printers, and other equipment as assigned.
Push/pull book carts and other library equipment that may weigh 50 lbs or more.
Read, write and comprehend directions in English.
Work in a team environment.
Work independently under general supervision.
Work effectively in a mobile environment and drive a large vehicle.

Promotional Eligibility
Any City of Glendale employee who meets the minimum qualifications for this position, has completed probation or six months of City employment, and is occupying a permanent full-time classification on file in the Human Resources Department.  Hourly City employees may be considered, provided that they furnish proof of continuous employment immediately preceding the final filing date, which would equal a minimum of six months of full-time service or 1040 part-time hours.  (Civil Service Rule VIII 4-E).

PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION - SIX-MONTH PROBATIONARY PERIOD

EVALUATION OF APPLICATION: Submitted application will be reviewed to ensure applicants meet the minimum requirements. All qualifying applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process.
 
ORAL INTERVIEW: (Weight of 100%) To evaluate the applicant's experience, education, and general background for the position. 
 
Candidates must achieve a minimum score of 70.00% in all examination steps in order to be placed on the eligible list.
