What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Works Maintenance Worker I position at City of Glendale, CO?
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Performs a variety of manual labor, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of streets, sewers, water lines, parks, sports fields, trees, buildings, and other municipal facilities and systems; drives a truck and operates light equipment incidental to the work. This employee may be required to work overtime and to change his/her regularly schedule work hours as needed. This employee is also subject to be called in for emergency assignments and occasional weekend work.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works primarily under the direction of the Utility and/or Park Supervisor, but also under Crew Leader(s) depending upon assignment.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES: Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Reads water meters and replaces/repairs water meters.
- Operates irrigation systems, setting irrigation time clocks, installs and repairs irrigation systems, and repairs water sprinklers, which may require trenching work at times.
- Assists other workers in various maintenance, repair and construction work; may work alone.
- Assists in servicing wells, pumps and other equipment in the non-potable water system.
- Assists in repairing pipe, sewer lines, drainage facilities and water mains.
- Assists others in maintaining and repairing engines and equipment.
- Performs work in the complete maintenance of the park system, including trash pick up, playground and public restrooms maintenance, grounds keeping, landscaping, and equipment operation.
- Sprays weeds, prunes trees and shrubs, plants flowerbeds, fertilizes turf; and checks for insect damage to trees, shrubs and turf. Keeps related records.
- Drives two axle vehicles; operates light park equipment and mowers. Checks oil, fuel, water, etc. in vehicles and equipment.
- Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning, and checking equipment and tools after use.
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisors.
- Neatly and accurately fills out various log sheets and forms.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
- Cleans storm water inlets and assists in the cleaning of sanitary sewer mains.
- Picks up and collects trash from the parks, bus stops and other areas. Removes graffiti.
- Performs hand watering of flowers throughout the city.
- Shovels and plows snow, primarily on walks and paths. Spreads de-icing chemicals as needed.
- May be called in to respond to emergency needs during evenings and on weekends. This position may also work rotating weekends.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
- May perform backup duties for any related positions as required.
- May be called upon to perform some office-related duties.
- May be asked to perform some janitorial duties.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in the maintenance, construction and repair activities.
- Skill in the operation of tools and equipment listed.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing, to understand, to follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
- Ability to remain calm in difficult situations, display tact and good judgment in dealing with confidential or sensitive matters, respond politely and courteously to citizen inquires and complaints.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
- Graduation from high school or general equivalency diploma (GED); and
- At least two years’ experience as a laborer or maintenance worker in the upkeep of grounds, streets, buildings, facilities, or utilities; or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- Must be a U.S. citizen and/or have authorization to work in the United States.
- Must be able to read and write the English language.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid Colorado Class “R” driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Must have or obtain a Class I Water Distribution Certification within 18 months of acceptance of the position.
- Must have or obtain a Class I Wastewater Collection Certification within 18 months of acceptance of the position.
- May be required to obtain a Class B CDL within 24 months of acceptance of the position.
The above-mentioned licenses and/or certifications must be maintained as long as the employee is employed as a Public Works Maintenance Worker I, with the City of Glendale. The City of Glendale reserves the right to request employees to seek additional certification and training if additional training and certifications are required to perform their job duties.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
A variety of tools and equipment related to maintaining parks, streets and other facilities which includes, but is not limited to: Dump trucks, Pickup trucks, Tractors, Loaders, Snowplows, Trenchers, Sewer Cleaning Machine, Air compressors, Jackhammers, Riding Mowers, Trimming Equipment, Shovels, and various other hand tools and equipment.
