What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mason/Maintenance Worker position at City of Gloversville, NY?
The work involves responsibility for efficient and capable performance of a variety of masonry tasks and odd jobs requiring a good knowledge of the trade. When not engaged in masonry work, the incumbent may also assist in electrical, carpentry, painting, plumbing and snow removal. General instructions are received regarding what tasks to perform permitting considerable leeway for planning the details of each assignment. Immediate supervision may be occasionally exercised over the work of helpers or laborers. Incumbent does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Caulks window frames and waterproofs the exterior of buildings;
Replaces, resurfaces and resets interior and exterior stone, slate, or concrete steps; Points up stonework or masonry on buildings;
Lays and repairs cement walks and curbs;
Builds and repairs brick walls, chimneys and furnace walls;
Repairs and replaces broken plaster;
Cuts and trims window and door openings in concrete and brick walls;
Repairs terrazzo and tile floors;
May assist in electrical, carpentry, painting, plumbing and snow removal; May operate a snowplow or related snow removal equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the trade and skill in the application of such knowledge to work assignments;
Ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions;
Ability to operate common masonry equipment and snow removal equipment; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
(A) One year of experience as a journey level mason; OR
(B) Three years of experience in assisting a journeyman mason as a Mason's Helper; OR
(C) Four years of construction experience involving masonry work; OR
(D) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A)
(B) and (C) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New York State operator's license appropriate for the vehicles operated.
