Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform these essential functions :
- Under supervision of fire officer, respond to fire calls and extinguish fires, including carrying nozzles and hoses, applying water streams, positioning and climbing ladders, creating openings in buildings (for access or ventilation), and protecting property from damage.
- May assist individuals from burning structures, administering CPR or other first-aid as needed.
- Respond to medical emergencies, assessing damages / needs and performing necessary rescue / first aid.
- Perform extrication duties for trapped person(s) during emergency situations.
- Assist with apparatus and equipment testing and maintenance, as well as building maintenance.
- Act as community steward, participating in fire prevention / educational activities and providing safety programs for commercial / industrial employees.
- Fulfill ongoing training (educational and drill) requirements.
- May operate firefighting vehicles as needed.

Timeline of responsibilities
First six months of employment, no minimum call back or duty crew shift requirements
Minimum 6 three-hour Duty Crew shifts per quarter with at least one shift each month
Minimum of 12 three-hour shifts per quarter, with at least two shifts each month
Probationary Firefighter Time Commitments
West Suburban Fire Academy : M / Th 1800-2200 and approximately 1 Saturday per month 0800-1600

Emergency Medical Responder or Emergency Medical Technician
Probationary Firefighters will need to spend a significant amount of time outside of class (unpaid) studying.
New Golden Valley Firefighters holding current Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations, and EMR or higher certifications may be exempted from attending the West Suburban Fire Academy by the Assistant Chief of Training.

Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors. Employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Frequently encounters noise and / or vibration exceeding 80 decibels (constant or intermittent) to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss. The employee will work in smoke filled environments and be exposed to extreme heat, will encounter a variety of physical hazards, damaged structures, moving mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, and work on high places. Exposed to burns, radiant energy, and exposure to explosives, toxic chemicals, and biological agents.
While wearing protective gear (weighing approximately 25 lbs.) and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (weighing approximately 35 lbs.) the firefighter works both inside where there may be protection from weather conditions and outside, with no protection from the weather. The firefighter may work in extremely cold temperatures or extremely high temperatures. Either will cause marked bodily discomfort or reactions. The firefighter will encounter wet conditions and high humidity to cause bodily discomfort. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and exchange information with others both in person and over the telephone. The employee is frequently required to move in confined spaces, ascend / descend ladders / stairs and operate equipment / tools consistently found in fire-fighting services. Staff will frequently read and interpret documents, including safety manuals and operating procedures. Staff will frequently traverse around the community, accident sites, fires, or other emergency site-locations. Will frequently lift items (either waist high, or overhead) and / or carry items weighing up to 100 pounds.
