General Statement of Duties/Distinguished Features of the Class
Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks and other duties as required in the maintenance of recreational facilities and management of Golf Course. Employees in this class perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work on a variety of Golf Course grounds and repair projects. They may occasionally operate non-specialized equipment in connection with tasks or projects.
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in grounds maintenance and landscape disciplines.
- Inspects Golf Course daily identifying conditions requiring mowing, watering, treatment of insect/fungus/diseases, damage from player use, etc. and initiates appropriate action to address any turf conditions identified.
- Determines chemical treatments, mixes and applies herbicides/pesticides/fungicides as necessary and evaluates results.
- Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, compost, mulch and other supplies as needed. Rakes and loads grass, leaves and brush; mows lawns and cleans grounds.
- Digs and backfills ditches; assists with maintenance of Golf Course and other parks and recreational facilities, as needed.
- Provides assistance to others as needed by carrying materials, tools and equipment. Prepares and maintains Golf Course and GEC grounds for events, reservations and day-to-day use by citizens and guests.
- Performs a variety of other heavy manual work in connection with the maintenance and construction of facilities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
- Knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of assigned equipment. Ability to interpret and apply compliance with OSHA regulations, including PPE.
- Knowledge in turf, shrub and tree care. Knowledge in irrigation repair and installation.
- Knowledge of the application of turf products to control weeds and fertilization. Skill with equipment mechanical repair and preventative maintenance.
- Skill in problem solving.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Ability to respond with courtesy to citizens.
- Ability to plan, obtain materials needed, and complete tasks on schedule. Ability to work with others in a team atmosphere.
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.

Physical Requirements/Special Requirements
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The work may require specific physical characteristic and abilities such as heightened strength, mobility, dexterity and full range of motion. The following additional physical abilities are also required: manual dexterity, hearing, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, talking, visual acuity and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work is generally performed in inside and outside environmental conditions and extremely hot and cold temperatures. Work is also subject to noise and dusts and involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places. Use of safe work practices with equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals are required. The work involves risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g. working around moving parts or machines, irritating chemicals, etc. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or equipment such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shield.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or its equivalent, supplemented by training in varied skilled trades with considerable related skills in Golf Course maintenance or grounds keeping;
- One (1) year of experience in landscape maintenance, turf management; and in the operation and maintenance of landscape equipment and other mechanical equipment;
- Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
- Ability to obtain NC certified pesticide applicators license within one year of hire date.
