Our Public Works department is seeking a Solid Waste Equipment Operator responsible for bulk collections using heavy equipment and CDL vehicles, while also addressing customer concerns. The ideal candidate should have a minimum of two years' experience in the Solid Waste field, a high school diploma or equivalent, and a valid Class B CDL driver's license with at least one year of CDL vehicle operation. Knowledge of general health and safety practices, active participation in safety-related activities, and adherence to personal protective equipment requirements are essential.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel and Word, knowledge of Access is a plus) and a minimum of two years of face-to-face customer service experience, with clear communication and strong customer service ethics. The successful candidate must perform bulk collections in extreme weather, be available for overtime, and handle physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 lbs. climbing in and out of vehicles, and performing safety inspections in line with Federal CDL guidelines.

- Provides solid waste collection with the use of sanitation collection vehicles; performs routine vehicle/equipment maintenance; delivers and exchanges refuse and recycling containers. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Provides customer service by answering inquiries and instructing citizens on the proper disposal of waste.
- Formal Education/Knowledge: Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature that may be obtained with six-months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Community college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
- Experience: Minimum six months experience in a related field.
- Certifications and Other Requirements: Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License
- Reading: Work requires the ability to read general correspondences, memorandums and letters, technical training manuals for equipment operation.
- Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- Writing: Work requires the ability to write City codes, general correspondences, memorandums and letters.
- Managerial: Semi-Complex - Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.
- Policy/Decision Making: Moderate - The employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices. Work involving discretion is typically reviewed before finalized.
- Technical Skills: Limited Application - Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization. Limited analysis and independent thinking is utilized.

Solid Waste Equipment Operator Objectives
Within Three Months:
- Perform proper pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the rear loader truck
- Complete SOP and JHA training on the rear loader truck
- Execute 25% of the bulk collection routes without aide from a coworker or route book
- Input daily route information utilizing the Canvas app
- Become familiar with the City’s Policies and Procedures
Within Six Months:
- Conduct bulk collection inspections by issuing educational notices
- Complete inspection documentation and perform inspection data entry
- Execute 50% of the bulk collection routes without aide from a coworker or route book
- Perform all proper maintenance on all sanitation equipment
Within One Year:
- Complete SOP and JHA training on the grapple tractors
- Perform proper pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the grapple tractors
- Operate grapple tractor safely and efficiently without assistance from coworkers
- Complete all city required annual training
- Obtain a Class “A” Arizona Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- Attend a public outreach event
- Execute 75% of the bulk collection routes without aid from a coworker or route book
