BRIEF COACH DESCRIPTION:
Join the Goodyear Roadrunners Special Olympics program! Volunteers are the backbone of the Special Olympics program and we need your help to make our program a success. Whether you have an athlete on the team or not, you are welcome to apply to become a volunteer with our Special Olympics program.
Special Olympics sports are offered year-round and while previous coaching experience or sport specific knowledge is beneficial, you don’t need to be an expert in a sport to contribute to the team! Special Olympics is about transforming lives, including your own. It’s about the spirit of giving and teamwork. It’s about making your community and neighborhood a more welcoming and accepting place for people of all abilities. If that sounds like something that interests you, then Special Olympics is the place for you!
SPORTS OFFERED:
Fall
- Swim, Golf, Soccer, Softball
Spring
- Cheer, Basketball, Flag Football, Volleyball, Powerlifting
COACHING EXPECTATIONS:
- Coaches are expected to attend an in-person coaches meeting prior to the start of the season
- Coaching requires a very basic understanding of the sport you coach and an ability to adapt to the Special Olympics modified rules
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with Special Olympics athletes, parents and staff
- Attend all practices and games
- Develop and implement meaningful and instructive practice plans
- Emphasize teamwork, equal participation and good sportsmanship
- Promote a welcoming, fun social environment
COACHING REQUIREMENTS:
- Applicant must be 18 years of age
- Submission of online background check
- After application, completion of mandatory trainings through Special Olympics Arizona
