ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs preventative maintenance on City vehicles and equipment; changes oil and transmission fluid; replaces fuel and air filters; inspects brakes, tires, and suspension;
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses engine failures; repairs diesel, gasoline, and propane engines;
- Diagnoses and repairs transmission, electrical and hydraulic failures;
- Maintains and repairs hydraulic cylinders, pumps, and motors;
- Rebuilds transmissions;
- Fabricates and engineers repairs of broken parts and performs welding tasks;
- Repairs exhaust systems;
- Repairs and replaces tires;
- Installs police and fire equipment in and on vehicles;
- Attends safety meetings;
- Performs welding and fabrication to install or repair trailers, extended sides, pipe racks and platforms;
- Operates appropriate diagnostic equipment;
- Repairs vehicles and equipment in the field;
- Serves as back up to co-workers; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Vocational/technical school training in auto repair or an additional one-year related work experience may be considered.
- Two years’ work experience in automotive work and repair.
- Any combination of education and experience totaling two years may be considered.
- Valid SC Driver’s License, Class B CDL required within one year of hire date.
- Must successfully progress to obtain EVT Certification annually.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the techniques, procedures, tools, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and HVAC systems on vehicles.
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance schedules for vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in the operation of diagnostic equipment.
- Skill in welding, designing, and fabricating parts.
- Ability to respond to emergencies 24 hours per day when serving in an on-call status.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid South Carolina Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Primary work location is in the maintenance shop, vehicle and office environment setting. Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Daily exposure to respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Weekly exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity. Daily exposure to mechanical hazards. Weekly exposure to chemical hazards. Monthly exposure to electrical hazards, fire hazards, and communicable diseases. The work requires the use of protective devices including be not limited to safety shoes, eye protection, hearing protection, and gloves.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Continuously requires vision and talking. Frequently requires standing, vision, hearing, walking, and sitting. Occasionally requires reaching, climbing, crouching, fine dexterity, handling, kneeling, foot controls, twisting, lifting, crawling, balancing, carrying, pushing/pulling, and bending. Medium strength demands include exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.
MENTAL DEMANDS
Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, noisy/distracting environment, and working closely with others as part of a team. Occasionally requires emergency situations, irregular schedule/overtime, and tedious or exacting work.
