ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides leadership during medical/trauma calls by controlling the scene, directing EMT's and making transport decisions;
  • Administer BLS and ALS Care to sick or injured persons in pre-hospital the setting;
  • Administer drugs, orally, nasally, rectally, intravenously, or by injection;
  • Maintains equipment on medic unit, to include pre-hospital drugs;
  • Ensures all pre-hospital drug quantities are correct and the medications are in date;
  • Conducts daily a daily checkoff of the Ambulance and reports any faulty equipment;
  • Is responsible for the narcotics on the assigned unit, to include their security, and the tracking of their administration and use;
  • Ensures that the station is kept in an orderly fashion;
  • Attends training classes to maintain certification licensure and keep abreast of new developments in the field;
  • Assists with community projects and events;
  • Provides a high level of customer service as a representative of the City of Goose Creek to the residents, visitors of the City of Goose Creek, and the Lowcountry in both emergent and non-emergent settings;
  • Maintains station and grounds, through cleaning and routine maintenance;
  • Utilizes e-PCR software for medical reporting;
  • Instructs CPR, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS);
  • Serves as back up to co-workers;
  • Attends mandatory and non-mandatory training;
  • Works independently with occasional review of work performance or records;
  • Assist with establishing a water supply on a fire scene;
  • Operates exterior handlines and master stream devices on a fire scene;
  • Places ground ladders for access and egress on a fire scene;
  • Assists in the evacuation of fire victims on a fire scene;
  • Salvage work; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Valid Paramedic Certification;
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support and Basic Life Support Provider certifications;
  • Valid Driver's License with a safe driving record. Obtain South Carolina license within 30 days of relocation; and
  • Must obtain Class E license within one-year from date of hire.

    • Ability to perform at peak physical effort during emergency, training, or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under the strenuous conditions of heights, heat, cold or smoke;
    • Ability to successfully complete all periodic training drills, including but not limited to in-house fire suppression training drills;
    • Ability to perform vehicle extrication and general understanding of rescue principles;
    • Aptitude to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; and
    • Capacity to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written or oral form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy and requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 50 pounds of force to move objects and the following physical abilities: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed in the field during emergency situations. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, inclement weather conditions, fire, heat and toxic gases. The work requires the use of protective devices, such as masks, goggles or gloves.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Departmental testing may be administered during interview;
  • Subject to psychological and physical health screenings;
  • Subject to criminal background check;
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing; and
  • Considered emergency essential position and subject to report to work during any declared emergency situations(s).
  • Ability to obtain SC Paramedic Certification within one-year from date of hire;
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within one-year from date or hire;
  • Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) certification within one-year from date of hire;
  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification within one-year from date of hire;
  • EMS Vehicle Operator Safety (EVOS) certification within one-year from date of hire;
  • National Incident Management System certifications (ICS 100, 200, 700, 800) completed within 60 days of hire.
