What are the responsibilities and job description for the Legal Intern position at City of Grand Island?
Responsibilities and requirements will vary depending on the needs of the Legal Department. Job assignment is usually for the summer or for short periods during breaks from an accredited law school. Applicant must be currently enrolled at an accredited law school, Interns working after their 2L year must be eligible for Senior Certification in Nebraska (§3-703).
Perform legal research and writing as directed by supervising Attorneys.
Prepare infraction and code enforcement matters for Court as assigned.
Make court appearances under the supervision of a licensed Attorney to include initial arraignments, pretrial conferences, and infraction or misdemeanor trials if the opportunity arises.
Assist in the review of matters to be presented to City Council such as contracts, agreements, resolutions, and ordinances.
Assist in preparing drafts of contracts and agreements.
Learn to evaluate legal matters that impact a First-Class City and how to evaluate and advise officials and City employees.
Attend meetings of City Council and other Boards and Commissions.
Under the supervision of licensed Attorneys, learn to address questions asked by Citizens, employees, and other stakeholders.
Help use and maintain record keeping and case management software.
Must maintain good character and fitness to include eligibility to obtain and maintain Senior Certification if eligible, access to law-enforcement sensitive materials and databases such as NCJIS, and access to confidential attorney files.
Flexibility is available in scheduling, however once schedule is set, regular in-person attendance that is punctual and dependable is required.

Learn and develop the ability to deliver legal opinions in a variety of situations.
Learn to evaluate complex issues, to provide risk assessments to officials, and to assist officials in navigating the intersection of their legal duties and political pressures.

Follow instructions to accomplish tasks assigned by supervisor.
Meet required schedules while producing quality work.
Receive close supervision on all aspects of assignments and hands-on teaching from assigned supervisor.
Take the initiative to learn standard practices and techniques.
Recognize discrepancies in results, and follows operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes.
Be proficient in all equipment, machinery, and/or software required to accomplish assigned tasks.
Scan files for permanent storage.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:

Use of standard office software programs, including Microsoft Office.
English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Safe work practices.
Legal research software, specifically Westlaw.
Ability to:
