This is responsible work reading water consumption meters. Work includes entering readings into hand-held computers, inspecting meters for tampering, irregularities, and malfunctions. Work involves walking long distances in all weather conditions, uncovering meters, and dealing with the public when entering private property. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Meter Maintenance Supervisor or Meter Reader Lead Worker who review computer records for accuracy and efficiency. Readings on the assigned route(s) are completed independently after a period of training.

- Reads water consumption meters on assigned route(s); walks long distances to meter locations in various weather conditions; locates and uncovers meters as necessary; uses keys to enter private property.
- Restructures routes to read meters in sequence.
- Reads consumption by recording meter numbers into hand-held computers; analyzes water consumption habits.
- Inspects meters and connections for any defects, irregularities, malfunctions, and/or unauthorized connections.
- Reports meter defects, hazards, or related findings to proper authority by completing required work orders for service or customer service notices; updates codes used in accounts.
- Resolves and/or refers public inquiries and complaints.
- Assists in rereading meters to check the accuracy of earlier readings.
- May drive truck to assigned area.
- May clean meter reading vehicles or area.
- May participate in surveys.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Graduation from high school.
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Preferably some experience involving public contact.
- Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license.
- The geography and street locations of the City.
- Some knowledge of city billing procedures.
- Read, record, and accurately enter meter readings.
- Understand and communicate policies, procedures, and services of the department.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public.
- Perform simple arithmetic calculations quickly.
- Learn operation of hand-held computers, meter routes, and meter operation.
