Job Overview

The City of Grandville is seeking a dynamic, experienced, and community-minded leader to fill the position of Fire Chief. The Fire Chief oversees the day-to-day operations of the department, including leading the City’s fire and rescue functions and staff. The Fire Chief is also responsible for preparing the department’s annual budget, developing long-range strategic plans, and setting short-term goals and objectives focused on improving the fire services to ensure the safety of the community.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

  • Current Fire Chief retiring after 35 years with the department, 14 years as Fire Chief
  • Average operating budget of $1.75 million, plus 5-year capital replacement plan
  • Combination department employing 12 career firefighters and officers, supported by 23 paid-on-call members
  • All sworn personnel are certified at the Firefighter II and Hazardous Materials Operations level
  • All career personnel, as well as over half of the paid-on-call team, are licensed at the EMT-B level or higher
  • Department vehicles include 3 engines, an aerial platform, a medic unit, an ice/water rescue unit, a traffic blocker/attenuator, and a chief’s car. Two of the engines and the aerial platform are less than 3 years old

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s degree in fire sciences, public administration, or a related field
  • Five (5) years of command officer level experience in a municipal fire department
  • Michigan Firefighter I & II certifications Michigan Fire Officer I, II & III certifications
  • Michigan EMT Basic certification Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to plan, organize and administer comprehensive fire suppression, prevention, and emergency medical response program.
  • Ability to develop effective work teams and motivating individuals to meet goals and objectives
  • Ability to plan respond quickly to changing situations under emergency conditions

The City of Grandville is located off I-196 on the southwest side of Kent County, 10 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids. Grandville encompasses an area of approximately 8 square miles, with a population of 16,223 as of the 2020 census. Grandville is home to highly sought after public and private schools, diverse residential neighborhoods, well-kept parks, a regional mall, and many other destination shops and restaurants. A farmers market and numerous community events attract visitors throughout the year and provide residents with opportunities to enjoy music, food, and family-friendly activities.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Salary: $105,000 - $135,000 annually Healthcare: Medical, dental, vision options
  • Retirement: 401(a) retirement plan with 10% employer contribution optional 457 plan
  • Additional benefits: life insurance, long-term disability insurance, Employee Assistance Program
  • Paid time off: vacation, sick, personal days and holidays
