Job Summary
With supervision, this position books arrestees into jail, inventories property/possessions, completes a search for contraband, to include weapons and drugs, contacts outside assistance, and expedites documentation for processing and/or release, all according to state and federal regulations. Conducts regular inspections for safety violations and hazards. Completes reports as needed.
Essential Functions
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
Minimum age of 18. High school diploma or equivalent.
Must pass TLETS access and CJIS awareness course within six (6) months from date of hire.
Must pass a Municipal Jailer training class approved by the department and receive Intoxilyzer certification within one (1) year from date of hire or at the earliest available opportunity thereafter.
This position requires applicant to pass a full background investigation, including polygraph examination.
Due to Criminal Justice Information Security (CJIS) requirements, the candidate must never have been convicted, put on court-ordered community supervision, or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of the court order. Class A Misdemeanor Conviction, Deferred Adjudication or Felony Conviction are permanent disqualifiers.
Must be in compliance with the department's drug and tattoo policy.
Must pass a Federal/National criminal background check and credit check. Must have a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.
Must pass a pre-employment basic physical, drug screen, functional assessment screening (Level 1), Titmus vision screening, Ishihara vision screening, and smell test.

Essential Functions
- Books arrestees into custody, including fingerprinting, searches, recording and filing standard documentation and forms, photographing the arrestee, conducting property inventories, and assisting with outside contacts.
- Cares for arrestees during incarceration and releases prisoners from custody according to standard Police Department policies and procedures. Care includes feeding, close supervision, summoning medical assistance as needed, dispensing prescription medication, administering basic first aid, allowing phone calls, and logging visitation by legal counsel, family, etc.
- Performs arrestee release activities involving accurate completion of necessary documentation and forms for transfer or release and receiving and correctly handling bond money.
- Performs accurate accounting and dispensing of arrested person's cash.
- Answers citizen and arrestee questions regarding standard jail operating procedures and processes.
- Furnishes information for court officials, bail bondsmen, families, attorneys, and other law enforcement personnel.
- Maintains jail cells, book-in area, and staff area as required by department regulations.
- Receives, counts, records, and washes all arrestee laundry and food preparation and serving utensils.
- Assists other areas of the police department with various tasks, including but not limited to, taking lobby walk-in reports, taking phone reports, assisting with various records functions, and phone/lobby support, as required.
- Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
- Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
- Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.
