What are the responsibilities and job description for the GIS Engineering Intern position at City of Grapevine?
Responsible for assisting in the creation and maintenance of GIS data and Public Works Assets. Incumbent will be expected to perform a variety of office and field work necessary in supporting projects and activities as assigned.
1. Collects and processes field data using Public Works GPS equipment and GIS tools.
2. Produces maps using ArcGIS Pro for Public Works departmental needs (water, sewer, storm drain, pavement, and traffic systems).
3. Creates GIS data and graphics necessary for the production of new GIS maps.
4. Manages tasks and projects as assigned.
5. Addresses inconsistencies in GIS data using field investigative methods.
6. Performs other duties as requested by Public Works staff.
7. Uses Python programming skills to automate Public Works related workflows.
8. Provides GIS support to internal and external customers through access to maps, analysis results and GIS data. Coordinates with staff and public to discuss GIS needs and abilities via email, phone and in person.
9. Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
10. Regular and timely attendance in the office are required for this position.
11. Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.
SKILL, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Must have a basic knowledge of ArcGIS applications, including ArcGIS Online, and the ability to edit graphic and tabular data, run geoprocessing tools, and design maps in ArcGIS Pro.
Knowledge of Geographic Information System concepts, design methods, procedures, techniques and methodology; modern and complex principles and practices of record keeping; algebra, geometry, and statistics as applied to routine GIS computations.
Knowledge of cartographic concepts and standards with the ability to read, understand and work from plats, deeds, legal descriptions and drawings is essential.
Skills in operating and properly utilizing a variety of office equipment including plotter, computers and peripheral equipment.
Must have the ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.
Must have excellent oral and written communications skills.
Must be a self-motivated, team-oriented individual with good time management skills and a desire to complete high quality work.
Must make sound decisions using good judgment.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must be pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, GIS, Geography, or related field.
This position requires general knowledge of computers, the Windows operating system, networking, and Windows Office products.
Must pass a Federal/National criminal background check. Must have a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.
Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
