What are the responsibilities and job description for the Roundhouse Mechanic II position at City of Grapevine?
Inspects, diagnoses and repairs vintage diesel electric locomotives, steam locomotives and passenger coaches to railroad industry safety standards.
1. Works in a team environment assisting other mechanics performing repairs to historic railroad equipment.
2. Possesses knowledge in large and small internal combustion engines including EMD, Cummins, Caterpillar.
3. Utilizes hand tools and power tools safely and efficiently. Micrometers, gauges, wrenches, hammers, rulers, air tools, multi-meters, etc.
4. Possesses the ability to obtain Locomotive Movers certification to perform maintenance and fueling.
5. Performs 31 service day inspections, 92 service day inspections, and Annual inspections on all railroad equipment to FRA and Railroad Industry standards.
6. Diagnoses malfunctions, and perform preventative maintenance on locomotive and passenger car systems including but not limited to, air brakes, electrical, cooling, fuel, exhaust, power train, suspension, and HVAC systems.
7. Utilizes manual machine shop tooling and machines including, drill press, mill, lathes, grinders, oxygen and acetylene torches, and SMAW, GMAW welding equipment.
8. Manufactures and repairs all necessary parts and components relating to steam and diesel locomotives, historic railroad passenger, while working in a dynamic environment with shifting projects.
9. Maintains clean work environment and ensure equipment is in clean, safe, and in presentable condition.
10. Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
11. Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.

• Must have skill in operating a variety of equipment used in railroads, maintenance and repair functions and operations.
• Must have skill in operating a two-way radio.
• Must have skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools used in the repair and servicing of mechanical equipment.
• Ability to identify abnormal readings or trends in data collected from gauges, meters, dials, instruments, etc., according to established formats.
• Ability to follow oral and written directions.
• Ability to diagnose defective operations and excessive wear on mechanical equipment parts and components.
• Ability to diagnose complex repair needs of railroad equipment.
• Ability to determine functional interrelationship of parts within a mechanical system.
• Ability to interpret technical reference manuals.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
High school or GED is required.
Requires three years of experience in the repair and service of locomotives, or automobiles, or trucks or heavy equipment.
Previous welding, plumbing and electrical knowledge/experience is preferred.
Must pass a Federal/National criminal background check. Must complete DOT Regulation 49 CFR Part 40, Section 40.25 Release of Information. Must have a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.
Must pass a pre-employment basic physical, FRA 5 panel drug screen, and functional assessment screening (Level 1). Must pass a pre-employment Department of Transportation Railroad (FRA) vision (Ishihara and Titmus) and audio screening.
Will be subject to periodic random drug and alcohol testing. Will be subject to Department of Transportation Railroad (FRA) vision and audio screenings every three years as required by law.
