Job Title: Water/Wastewater Operator
Department: Water Department
Reports to: Water Superintendent
Pay Statute: Hourly
SUMMARY
Performs work necessary to operate water/wastewater treatment plant, lift stations, and water wells. Duties include but are not limited to checking to ensure pumps are working properly, loading chemicals, greasing equipment, packing pumps, and adjusting controls. Performs minor maintenance repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment and systems. Works within established safety policies and procedures and monitors and maintains a safe working environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs activities related to safe and competent operation and maintenance of the water department. Receives training in the work methods and procedures; performs manual, semi-skilled, and skill construction and maintenance work; operates construction and maintenance equipment; performs clean-up work; reads meters; changes, maintains, and replaces meters; performs activities related to wastewater collection; maintains sewer lines, manholes, and other collection equipment in operational order and performs preventative maintenance as necessary. May have weekend duties and may be subject to emergency recall.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
QUALIFICATIONS
A. Training and experience: receive training and instructions in work methods and procedures, safety requirements, preventative maintenance, operation of power tools, motorized equipment and materials/parts identification. Understands meter routes, locations, and mechanics of different kinds of meters.
B. Current driver’s license
C. Obtain and maintain proficiency, certification, and minimum licensing requirements for the City of Gravette.
JOB KNOWLEDGE
A. Knowledge of operation of light and heavy equipment, including backhoe and excavator
B. Knowledge of water lines, locating lines, installing lines, and repair and maintenance techniques
C. Knowledge of pumps, valves, storage tanks, meters, and control systems
D. Working knowledge of hand and power tools
E. Working knowledge of applicable safety requirements at job sites, especially trenching, shoring, and barricading
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
A. Ability to attain a minimum of class II water distribution license and class III wastewater license.
B. Ability to perform work and make decisions without supervision
C. Ability to perform weekend duties during times of emergencies
D. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
E. Ability to use hand and power tools
F. When assigned, ability to supervise a part-time or other employee in the performance of tasks
G. Ability to perform manual labor, both indoor and outdoor and in all elements
JOB RELATIONS
A. Responsible to the water superintendent with related responsibilities to the street superintendent during times of absence of the water superintendent.
B. This position has routine contact with citizens, customers, other city employees, construction crews, and other utility workers.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Reads meters monthly; conducts re-reads; performs lock-outs and unlocks for both normal and delinquent accounts; installs new meters; maintains meter replacement program; assists in installation and replacement of water lines; helps repair broken lines; assists with new service taps; performs backfill and cleanup duties; assists in timely and appropriate location of water lines to protect against accidental breakage; and collects water samples for appropriate laboratory analysis.
B. Checks for water leaks; investigates complaints and reports from the public; checks and flushes fire hydrants; helps maintain water line valve and maintenance program; checks and assists in operation and maintenance of water towers, control valves, and electrical/pressure control equipment and conducts daily pressure readings, tank levels, and chlorine residual tests.
C. Maintains water department pumps, tapping machines, and related tools and equipment; checks, maintains, and operates backhoe, tractor, truck, loader, mower, brush hog, line locating equipment, and other departmental equipment and vehicles; helps maintain organization, accountability, and inventory of new parts and equipment.
D. Assists water and all other departments and personnel in any emergency or other trouble shooting situation; performs routine and emergency maintenance.
E. Erects and maintains proper trench shoring and bracing; wears appropriate safety gear when applicable; remains alert at all times for dangerous gas/chemical exposure and water line rupture or explosion.
F. Performs other duties as required.
G. Assists in the maintenance of grounds and equipment.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Obtain and maintain appropriate certification and minimum license required for department.
B. Repairs and maintains pumps, compressors, lift stations, and aerators. Helps repair broken lines and assists with new service taps.
C. Checks manholes on problem lines weekly.
D. Assists with installation of new lines when needed.
E. Maintains city’s sewer collection system.
