Job Summary


Under the direction of the shift supervisor patrols an assigned beat in the enforcement of law and order. May be assigned to work in specialty areas. Takes intensive field and basic training in the early period of employment.

Job Duties and Responsibilities


1.Under the direction of the shift supervisor; patrols an assigned beat in the enforcement of law and order. May be assigned to work in specialty areas. Takes intensive field and basic training in the early period of employment.

A.Operates an automobile in patrolling an assigned area for the prevention of crime and the enforcement of traffic laws and regulations.

B.Respond to radio and telephone dispatches and appears at scenes of disorder or crime.

C.Carries out assigned duties in specific areas such as evidence; crime prevention; tactical squads; community relations; special patrol operations; and investigations.

D.Notes and reports traffic hazards.

E.Assists in controlling traffic at scenes of emergencies.

F.Investigates and prepares reports on accidents; offenses; and damages to property.

G.Arrests and apprehends violators of the law.

H.Issues citations.

I.Prepares reports on arrests and impounded property.

J.Performs business checks.

K.Issues summons for parking and moving violations.

L.Inspects establishments providing alcoholic beverages and entertainment.

M.Intervenes in private or public disputes to protect the public and maintain order.

N.Gives aid to injured persons and requests medical attention when necessary.

O.Makes reports of cases handled and action taken.

P.Appears in court to present evidence collected.

Q.Transports prisoners.

R.Performs initial investigations and assists or follows-up in the investigations of crimes involving adults and/or juveniles.

S.Investigates complaints.

T.Interrogates persons whose actions are suspicious.

U.Assists fire and other departments as required.

V.Speaks before schools and civic groups as required.

W.Impounds and tags evidence.

X.Trains new officers and instructs them in law enforcement matters as assigned.

Y.Serves warrants and subpoenas.

Z.Performs other duties as assigned or required.


Qualifications


I.Requires ability to read; interpret; and understand departmental rules; policies; instructions; laws; regulations; and police literature; together with an aptitude for law enforcement work.

II.Requires ability to gain knowledge of federal; state; and local laws and ordinances that are enforced by the department.

III.Requires ability to gain knowledge of search and seizure; investigation; crime; and prevention methods. IV.Requires ability to gain knowledge of the rules of evidence and the laws governing the custody of persons.

V.Requires the ability to prepare accurate and comprehensive reports.

VI.Requires the ability to analyze situations and data; and to arrive at sound conclusions. VII.Requires a working knowledge of computers and software applications.

VIII.Requires a good working knowledge of English; spelling; grammar; and math.

IX.Requires the ability to communicate effectively with the public and staff in verbal and written formats.

X.Requires the ability to make decisions in accordance with laws; ordinance; regulations; and established policies.

XI.Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality.

XII.Requires the ability to exercise considerable tact and diplomacy when dealing with the public; other criminal justice agencies; city officials and other city employees.

XIII.Requires the ability to demonstrate proper etiquette when dealing with the public over the phone or in person.

XIV.Requires ability to gain certification as a law enforcement officer by the state of Kansas within one year of employment.

XV.Requires a valid Kansas driver’s license.


Special Requirements


Any combination of experience and training equivalent to a high school diploma. Some college level work in courses related to law enforcement is preferred.

Working Conditions


Work is inside and outside and involves prolonged sitting. Flexibility is important because of the need to enter and exit vehicles frequently; inspect buildings; climb over and around obstacles; suddenly move out of the way of danger; etc. Mental alertness is important because of the need to make fine discriminations and decisions concerning subtle cues of impending danger; or to discover inconsistencies in the testimony of witnesses or suspects; etc. Physical and mental demands may change dramatically within a very short time period. Subject to eyestrain. Involves contact with dangerous persons; exposure to hazardous material; narcotics; exposure to noise; and noxious odors. Subject to callback and working rotating shifts.
