Nature of Work
Professional engineering responsibility for serving as a project engineer on moderate to large public infrastructure projects. Responsibilities extend to acting on behalf of the City Engineer in the absence of the City Engineer. Work is performed under the general direction of the City Engineer.
Essential Functions of Work
- Designs municipal and public works facilities and capital improvements of moderate to high complexity.
- Reviews and certifies the design, plans and specifications for public water supply, wastewater collection, storm drainage, water and wastewater treatment, streets, highways, traffic control devices, buildings, parks and other recreational facilities.
- Provides contract administration of construction projects to ensure adherence to methods and materials and mediates disputes between the City and contractors.
- Provides technical assistance and guidance to various city department officials and other public organizations on questions and issues related to civil engineering.
- Directs and reviews the work of consultants by approving plans, specifications and contracts.
- Supervises technical personnel in the planning, design and operation of public facilities.
- Prepares moderately complex to complex engineering technical studies and reports.
- Serves as the City Engineer in the City Engineer's absence.

This position assists supervises technical personnel and serves in a supervisory role in the absence of the City Engineer.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is primarily performed in an office environment but requires periodic site visits.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, reach, ride and perform similar body movements. Must have the ability to perform moderator physical work and to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at a time; the possession of hand / eye coordination sufficient to operate a personal computer, office equipment and a motor vehicle; the ability to talkand hear in person or by telephone; and the ability to see and read instructions and blueprints and conduct inspections.
EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
The work schedule is a 40-hour work week, Sunday through Saturday. This position is exempt and ineligible for overtime. Normal work hours are Monday through Friday.
TRAVEL
Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
