Job Summary:

The City of Greeley is seeking a Database Administrator to join our Application Services team in IT.  This position reports to the Application Services Manager and will enhance database performance, perform restores, implement recovery procedures, handle performance tuning, and conduct regular system backups, while ensuring technical and functional designs meet business requirements. This position is responsible for configuring, maintaining, managing, monitoring, and supporting various City departmental databases and applications including SQL Server Database, Community Development, Laserfiche, SalesTax, RecTrac, and FullCourt.

Furthermore, you will maintain, troubleshoot, tune, secure, support, and design servers and databases, while collaborating with others to resolve technology issues. This includes communicating with customers, evaluating business processes and requirements, organizing, communicating, and following through on goals, deadlines, and expectations.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Typically requires a basic understanding and application of theoretical or scientific principles, acquired through college education or advanced vocational skills strengthened by three to five (3-5) years of on-the-job experience.
  • Experience with complicated IT practices and precedents.

OR 

  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job,

AND 

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software, including processors, internal hardware dynamics, applications and programming.
    • Specifically, SQL, SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Server Profiler, database monitoring tools, server monitoring tools, collaboration tools, Confluence Jira, BitBucket SQL Server, SQL Server Integration Services, SQL Server Reporting Services, Kanban vSphere, and VMWare.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of information technology service management (ITSM) principles and best practices.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity and privacy principles and best practices.
  • Knowledge of common computer operating systems.
  • Knowledge of computer networking fundamentals.
    Technical computer skills, including the ability to assess complex data, utilize common operating systems, learn new software programs, and understand programming languages.
  • Computer programming skills, including the ability to evaluate and solve problems, stay organized, be cognizant of and address details, and utilize common programming languages (e.g., SQL, SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Server Profiler, database monitoring tools, server monitoring tools, collaboration tools, Confluence Jira, BitBucket SQL Server data tools, SQL Server Integration Services, SQL Server Reporting Services, Kanban vSphere, VMWare, etc.).
  • Ability to collect and document business needs and translate the information collected into technical specifications.
  • Ability to write technical documentation and specifications with the intention that it be easily understandable to the target audience.
  • Ability to translate and explain technical concepts and vocabulary in common terms to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to learn and apply new technologies.
  • Ability to prepare reports and briefings that can be understood by a variety of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • The nature of the tasks typically requires a specialized field of knowledge within the IT field.
  • Knowledge of the business and organizational structure of Colorado municipalities.
  • Collaboration skills, including the ability to work with others from different areas and backgrounds to reach a common goal.
  • Computer skills, including the ability to utilize Microsoft Office programs (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and learn and experiment with new software and systems.

Essential Functions:

  • Database administration including designing a database infrastructure to ensure system scalability, performance, and reliability; configuring, implementing, maintaining, troubleshooting, tuning, upgrading, securing, monitoring performance statistics, coding, reporting, and migrating data.
  • Project management, including identifying the appropriate stakeholders and resource needs.
  • Leads stakeholders to ensure that the scope and business requirements are met.
  • Monitors the progress of the project by communicating and following through on project deadlines and expectations.
  • Designs databases including gathering business requirements from customers, coordinates with the application developers, and designs databases that will meet both the technical needs of the developers and the business requirements of the customers.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and resolves technical issues regarding organizational server infrastructure and server performance.
  • Designs, configures, implements, tunes, upgrades, and secures servers.
  • Performs business integration and reporting services which includes consulting with customers to identify their processes, reporting and integration requirements, designing, coding, developing, maintaining, and supporting reporting, extraction, transformation and loading processes to integrate organizational systems and to consolidate or import data that can be used for creating customer and system reports.
  • Creates, edits, and maintains technical documentation and instructions for servers, databases, applications, and processes.
  • Consults with customers to identify appropriate technical solutions, develops standards and guidelines, and communicates technical actions and expectations to a diverse audience of both technical and non-technical users.
  • Collaborates with other Development staff to determine database requirements for new applications that they are developing.
  • Gathers information about business processes and needs, communicate technical requirements that are needed to support business expectations.
  • Organizes and facilitates planning meetings, monitors and follows through with customers to assure that deadlines and expectations are met.
  • Contacts vendors to get technical specifications and quotes for software and hardware to assure that the technical requirements that have been stated by City of Greeley project teams are being met.
  • Gathers information about the departments business metrics and determine how they needs to view their data.
  • Collaborates with departments to develop reports that meet their business requirements.
  • Collaborates with other Systems Administrators to design and develop a server infrastructure to ensure system scalability, performance, reliability and to makes recommendations to upper management regarding the technical and financial resources that are needed to support technology.
  • Consults with vendor to troubleshoot technology issues with software and/or hardware.
  • Problem solves and performs decision making: Work is defined by policies, principles, and departmental objectives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Travel:  Approximately 10% flexible, local travel required.
