Job Summary:

As a member of the Golf Management Team, the Head Golf Professional is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the facility.   

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

Minimum Requirements:

  • PGA Associate/Member or commensurate experience 
  • Minimum of three (3) years as a Head Golf Professional or five (5) years as an Assistant Golf Professional

  • None

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Fundamental knowledge of the game of golf, rules of golf, golf facility operations, and tournament operations.
  • Fundamental supervisory practices and principles.
  • Acts as a role model for all employees by demonstrating the behavior and work ethic expected of all employees.
  • Strong organizational, planning and prioritization skills.
  • Self-motivated with desire to promote and market.
  • Service and customer focused attitude.
  • Remains up to date on customer relationship management tactics and strategies.
  • Experienced computer user including Microsoft Word and Excel. Proficient in other applications, i.e. email, internet, tournament and database.
  • Maintains and promotes a positive professional image within the community.
  • Attends conferences, workshops, meetings, and trade shows to keep abreast of marketing and business trends.
  • Maintains a credible golf game and remain current on teaching innovations.

Essential Functions:

Golf Operations Management

  • Oversees the reservation system, starting, monitoring, and pace of play.
  • Tracks and verifies all players and guests, green fees, golf cars, and other charges necessary, and facilitate accurate accounting and recordkeeping .
  • Works with Golf Course Superintendent to oversee golf car fleet while ensuring proper maintenance and recordkeeping.
  • Manages the tournament program, group outings, and leagues that service all customer segments.
  • Oversees the operations of a well-managed practice facility.
  • Plays golf with a variety of members and/or guests as time permits.
  • Administers the Rules of Golf and educate staff. Promotes and provides Rules of Golf clinics to the membership.

Retail Management

  • Oversees retail merchandise pro shop in step with the mission of the golf operation and facility.
  • Maintains a profitable golf merchandising operation.
  • Oversees development of buying plans and all golf related purchasing.
  • Supervises physical inventories, present a diverse and desirable array of golf equipment, apparel, accessories.
  • Assists in the development of necessary systems utilizing POS to safeguard inventories and cash.
  • Supervises and trains all golf shop staff to maximize sales opportunities.
  • Ensures customer database includes and tracks important dates, spending, sizes, preferences.
  • Maintains an attractive and orderly appearance in and around the golf shop.
  • Conducts accurate and timely inventory counts.

Player Development

  • Develops, provides, and oversees an enhanced golf instruction program offering individual and group clinics for all levels. Ensure that the services of a well-trained staff of professional instructors are available where required.
  • Develops and oversees player development programs.
  • Focuses on programs for women, families, seniors, and juniors.
  • Assists with the training of the full facility staff in regard to player development and encourage their participation.

Golf Administration

  • Recruits, hires, trains, motivates, and supervises all golf department staff.
  • Ensures evaluations and annual reviews are completed and recorded for all applicable staff.
  • Attends staff meetings as scheduled by management and schedules staff meetings with golf operations personnel.
  • Updates and maintains golf shop policies and procedures and job descriptions and ensures they are adhered to and posted in the proper areas.
  • Maintains safety standards and safety equipment within OSHA requirements.
  • Assist in the publications of email newsletters, informational, and promotional materials.
  • Works closely with and provides guidance and consultation with all golf associations and leagues.
  • Attends applicable association and league meetings, management, and staff meetings when requested.
  • Adheres to, enforces, and implements policies and procedures of the facility.
  • Sets up regular written communication with supervisor to include facility, programming, staff and customer updates.

Business and Financial

  • Responsible for the financial and operational performance of the golf shop operations and golf services.
  • Ensures all financial goals and objectives are being achieved.
  • Assists in the development and preparation of budgets, including forecasting and review of all golf operations revenues and expenses on an annual basis.
  • Ensures systems controls are in place to safeguard assets, revenues, and resources.
  • In keeps with facility goals, utilize yield management techniques to maximize course usage.

Other Facility/Departmental Responsibilities

  • Works closely with the Golf Course Superintendent to achieve the goals and objectives of the facility.
  • Maintains a close working relationship with the Golf Course Superintendent and provides advice on course playability and tournament set up.
  • Coordinates plans with the Food and Beverage concessionaire for food and beverage needs for all golf functions.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Organizes and delegates assignments to team members. 
  • Hires, trains, motivates and coaches employees. 
  • Evaluates employee performance and goal setting. 
  • Holds employees accountable for assigned tasks and goals. 
  • Provides timely and constructive feedback and training opportunities. 
  • Provides training opportunities with a focus on employee development. 
  • Resolves conflicts and complaints. 
  • Analyzes information and processes and developing more effective or efficient processes. 
  • Establishes and achieves business and financial objectives.                                                                                                         

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Work Environment: 

  • Will be working in all weather conditions
  • Frequent and heavy contact with the public and City employees in person and by telephone.
  • Frequent interruptions.
  • Flexibility to work early mornings, weekdays, nights, weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Work is performed in an open office environment with heavy noise levels, at times.

Physical Requirements:

  • Vision to perform physical activities, read computer keyboards, reference books, and other written documents.
  • Strength and stamina enough to walk, stand, stretch, bend, lift or carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity enough to complete daily work such as operate computer keyboards, drive and operate motor vehicles, and operate other office equipment, and complete paperwork.

Travel

  • May travel up to 10% of the time.
