Full Salary Ranges:

Plant Operator A: $30.96 - $41.83 Hourly

Plant Operator B: $25.53 - $34.47 Hourly

Plant Operator C: $23.70 - $30.82 Hourly

Plant Operator D: $21.54 - $28.03 Hourly

NOTE: Operator level will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and certifications at the time of hire.

Anticipated Hiring Ranges:

Plant Operator A: $30.96 - $36.39 Hourly

Plant Operator B: $25.53 - $30.05 Hourly

Plant Operator C: $23.70 - $27.31 Hourly 

Plant Operator D: $21.54 - $24.81 Hourly 

Why do I see two salary ranges?

The City of Greeley in compliance with Colorado state law, includes a salary range for all positions posted.  This law is intended to improve wage transparency.  The City of Greeley, in support of wage transparency, posts both the full salary range for each position (what you might anticipate your earnings could be if you work for the City of Greeley for some time), as well as the anticipated hiring range (the range within which the City anticipates making an offer).  The actual offer extended will be based on your years of relevant experience, education, certifications and potentially other factors.

Job Summary:

The Wastewater Treatment and Reclamation Operator is an integral part of the plant operations team who communicates and work closely with other treatment plant staff. The WTRF Operator adjusts and monitors wastewater treatment plant equipment, monitors treatment parameters, performs process control lab tests, records data, adjusts the application of chemicals and maintains the operations of the treatment facility, prepares reports, and works on special projects as may be assigned. The position requires being able to work flexible schedules which at times will include working weekends, holidays, evenings, or "on call" shifts. 

The Plant currently runs two shifts:  Day Shift: 5:30 AM – 3:30 PM and Night Shift: 3:30 PM – 1:30 AM.  This position will work the night shift consisting of 10-hour shifts, 4 nights a week with 3 days off every week, and is located at the  Greeley Water Treatment Reclamation Facility. 

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

Minimum Requirements

All Levels:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid and current driver’s license
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, including Excel

A Operator:

  • Two (2) plus years of experience in wastewater treatment.
  • Current Class “A” Wastewater Treatment Operator r certification valid in Colorado.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants,.

B Operator:

  • Current Class “B” Wastewater Treatment Operator certification valid in Colorado and must obtain Class “A” Wastewater  Treatment Operator certification within two (2) years of hire.
  • One and a half (1 ½) to Two (2) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants.

C Operator:

  • Current Class “C” Wastewater Treatment Operator certification valid in Colorado and must obtain Class “A” Wastewater Treatment Operator certification within (3) years.
  • Six (6) to Twelve (12) months of experience in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants.

D Operator:

  • Current class “D” Wastewater Treatment Operator certification valid in Colorado and must obtain Class “A” Wastewater Treatment Operator certification within four (4) years.

OR

  • A combination of education, experience, licensure, or certification that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job may be considered by the hiring authority.

Preferred

  • Two (2) or more years of vocational technical school, or a college degree with an emphasis in chemistry, biology, engineering, or wastewater technology.
  • Six (6) months or more experience in wastewater treatment.
  • Class D Wastewater Treatment Operator certification or higher with ability to earn higher licenses as experience and/or education requirements are met. 
  • Knowledge of advanced wastewater treatment practices and laboratory water quality parameter testing procedures.
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art equipment including SCADA systems and wastewater treatment plant instrumentation.
  • Valid Adult CPR certificate is preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants.
  • Working knowledge of PC-based methods, SCADA and software in Microsoft windows environment including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and ages.
  • Ability to think quickly, make swift decisions, troubleshoot, and take action to ensure continuity of operations of the treatment plant.
  • Ability to perform algebraic calculations of chemical feed rates and manually adjust the process pumps to output the feed rates.
  • Interpersonal skills, including the ability to facilitate interaction, communication, and teamwork between others.
  • Oral, written, and listening communication skills, including the ability to accurately interpret what others are saying and convey messages, information, concepts, and details accurately and clearly.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple concurrent and competing tasks and responsibilities, and adapt to changing priorities while maintaining personal effectiveness.
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and stay on task when completing special projects and daily assignments.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and reliable professional judgment, as well as collaboratively with a team to achieve desired results.
  • Ability to maintain a strong work ethic, positive problem-solving attitude, and enthusiasm for the work performed.
  • Ability to self-start and take initiative in completing daily tasks and special projects, focusing on activities that have the greatest impact on meeting work commitments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain partnerships with a variety of internal and external constituencies.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to examine and summarize data and trends in order to resolve issues and produce results.

Essential Functions:

  • Reads and interprets gauges and meters used in regulating operations of plant equipment.
  • Monitors objects and data for compliance and operating standards.
  • Performs daily record keeping, water quality sampling, and routing laboratory analysis.
  • Records and maintains data; collects and analyzes water samples.
  • Performs  janitorial and mechanical maintenance of the plant.
  • Attends safety sessions and stays informed about current safety and emergency procedures.
  • Uses hand and power tools to maintain facility.
  • Interprets water quality/quantity data and make appropriate adjustments.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  None.

Travel:  Approximately 10% minimal incidental travel in the Northern Colorado service area.

  • Possible exposure to hazardous chemicals & gases.
  • Work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Exposure to high noise levels, fumes or particles, risk of electrical shock.

Physical Requirements

  • Communication skills sufficient to convey information to Supervisor, the public, or other employees.
  • Ability to remain in a standing/walking position for long periods of time.
  • Ability to move items weighing up to 75 pounds and make repetitive motions.
  • Ability to work at heights greater than 10 feet.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate tools, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Flexibility to bend, twist and reach objects at all body levels, including overhead.
  • Ability to accurately input, retrieve, and verify work assignments. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
