The Law Department is hiring for Assistant City Attorney/Litigation Attorney. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on a wide range of municipal law matters with an emphasis on election law and specialization in civil litigation.
This position qualifies for Public Student Loan Forgiveness.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. plus additional hours as needed including evening meetings. Enjoy an alternate summer schedule - Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Friday, 7:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.!
This position has the opportunity to work remotely typically 1-day per week.
Hiring Range: $84,496-$99,382
No residency requirement.

- Acts as legal advisor and provides legal services to legislative body, committees, commissions, boards, and City departments.
- Represents committees, boards, and commissions in legislative and quasi-judicial proceedings.
- Handles litigation as assigned, including representing the City in court and before administrative agencies and defending depositions.
- Performs general municipal legal research, writing, and drafting.
- Drafts policy, procedures, ordinances, resolutions, legal briefs, legal memoranda, and other legal documents.
- Drafts, negotiates, and enforces contracts, leases, and various real estate documents, including lien rights, mortgages, among others.
- Directs timing and methods of delinquent account collection with appropriate staff.
- Assists the Municipal Prosecutor in prosecuting violations of City ordinances and appeals thereof.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Juris Doctorate Degree from an ABA accredited law school.
- 2-4 years of experience in municipal law and legislation strongly preferred.
- License to practice law in the State of Wisconsin.
- Admitted to practice law in federal courts at the time of hire or within 1 year of hire date.
- Compliance with continuing education requirements.
- Notary public commission.
- Must have acceptable personal and professional history as determined by successfully completing a background investigation.
A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.
- Good knowledge of City codes and ordinances and State law. Good knowledge of the principles of civil and criminal law and of the methods and practices of pleading, judicial procedures and the rules of evidence. Good knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, practices and references utilized in legal research. Good knowledge of conducting jury and bench trials in State and Federal Courts. Good knowledge of civil litigation and motion practice.
- Considerable skill in analyzing, appraising and organizing facts, evidence and precedents to ascertain the determining aspects of cases and to present such material in a clear and logical form. Considerable skill in determining alternative choices. Considerable skill in conducting legal research. Considerable skill in communicating complex ideas both orally and in writing. Considerable skill in organizing, prioritizing, monitoring, and controlling workflow deadlines.
- Considerable ability to work cooperatively and effectively with City departments, officials, and the general public. Ability to maintain an impartial demeanor in political issues. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to utilize a computer and the required software. Ability to work the required hours of the positions.
