JOB SUMMARY
This position performs skilled journeyman level mechanical work in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of light and heavy motorized vehicles and related equipment. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by technical training in automotive mechanics. Four (4) years of experience in diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of light and heavy motorized vehicles and related equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
The work is heavy and requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force to move objects. Also requires the following physical abilities: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed inside and outside in varying weather conditions with noise, fumes, gases, slippery surfaces, vibrations, odors, poor lighting, heights (up to 60 feet), confined spaces, and below ground level.

- Performs mechanical repairs and adjustments on power, drive, brake, steering, electrical, cooling, and related systems on light and heavy equipment including cars, trucks, tractors, graders, front end loaders, sweepers, refuse trucks, and other maintenance and construction equipment.
- Performs major and minor engine tune-ups and adjustments.
- Replaces tie rods, steering sectors, springs, shock absorbers, brakes, generators, alternators, regulators, starters, wiring, gauges, universal joints, differentials, axles, transmissions, and clutches, hydraulic motors, hoses, and fittings.
- Repairs and adjusts hydraulic systems.
- Completes motor overhauls and installs rebuilt motors.
- Operates timing light and a variety of other testing equipment.
- Maintains and repairs generators and pumps.
- Lubricates vehicles and equipment.
- Changes oil and oil filters and checks fluid levels.
- Cleans and changes air filters and replaces fan belts.
- Charges and replaces batteries.
- Changes, repairs, and rotates tires.
- Grinds and adjusts valves.
- Adds transmission fluid.
- Rebuilds or adjusts components as required.
- Pulls power mower motors.
- Assists other staff as necessary.
- Operates air compressor, air lift, chain hoist, drill press, and a variety of other repair and maintenance shop equipment.
- Performs steel fabrication and welding repairs, by operating gas and/or electric welding equipment.
- Completes work orders with list of parts and labor and enters into computer.
- Keeps work area clean and orderly.
- Assists with loading and unloading warehouse deliveries.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

- Possession of a valid Class "B" Florida Commercial Drivers License and compliance with vehicle use policy requirements, Section 8.15(c) in the City's Personnel Manual.
- This position is designated as a safety sensitive position.
- Knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive, maintenance, construction, and related equipment.
- Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, and of mechanical components of automotive, maintenance, construction, and related equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of equipment repair work.
- Knowledge of lubricating requirements of various automotive and heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of safe working procedures.
- Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive, maintenance, construction, and related equipment.
- Ability to distinguish colors.
- Ability to perform manual labor associated with major mechanical repair work.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and technical manuals.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, department heads, and the general public.
