About the Role:
As a Construction Inspector – Utilities, your primary responsibility will be inspecting water and sewer construction projects that are being added to the City’s infrastructure. You’ll ensure projects meet all applicable plans, specifications, and contract requirements. You will maintain written records of daily construction activities and work closely with contractors, engineers, and the public to guarantee the highest standards of construction quality and safety.
Key responsibilities include:
- Verifying the proper installation of water and sewer lines, including alignment, elevation, and grade.
- Documenting all inspection findings and coordinating water line chlorination and bacteriological sampling.
- Interacting directly with the public to provide information and resolve concerns.
- Maintaining cooperative working relationships with all stakeholders.
- Obtaining North Carolina Water Treatment Facility Operators Certification Board (NCWTFOCB) Certifications in both Water Distribution and Sewer Collection within 18 months of employment.
- Being cross-trained for all aspects of the Construction Inspections Section.
- This position requires physical activity including standing, walking, kneeling, stooping, and lifting up to 25 lbs., and more than two-thirds of your work will be outdoors.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High School/GED with 1-3 years of related water & sewer construction experience working with construction plans, diagrams, blueprints, specifications, and field stakeouts
- No High School Diploma/GED with 5-7 years of related water & sewer construction experience working with construction plans, diagrams, blueprints, specifications, and field stakeouts
- Valid Driver's License
- Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
- Experience in Public Works construction and managing/inspecting public water & sewer projects
- NCWTFOCB Certification in Distribution (Water) and NCWTFOCB Certification in Collections (Sewer) – (MUST attach copy of certification with application)
