Work Schedule: Monday thru Thursday 10am-2pm June – August, up to 16-20 hours per week

- Hourly Employment: Roster positions are paid hourly and do not include benefits such as medical, dental, or vision insurance, life insurance, paid leave, or paid holidays.
- Limited Hours: Roster employees may work up to, but no more than, 1,000 hours in a 12 month period.
- Pension System: Roster positions are not eligible for membership in the city’s pension system.

Parks and Recreation Summer Position Recruitment
The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department is a dynamic team transforming the way needs are met and services are provided to our residents. We are currently seeking qualified candidates to fill the role of Playground Counselor. The Playground Counselor is responsible for overall day-to-day group programming, discipline, direct supervision and management of children in the Summer Playground Program. The Playground Counselor must be able to relate to school age children (ages 5-15) and conduct age appropriate activities.
Responsibilities and duties will include:
- Acts as a role model to the children by exemplifying the City of Greensboro's Core Values (Honesty, Integrity, Respect, Stewardship);
- The employee in this position will supervises children between the ages of 5-15;
- Work independently and assists with implementing the summer food service program;
- Facilitates both formal and informal play activities;
- Plans, organizes, and implements a daily schedule of activities including crafts, sports, wellness, games, music, drama, etc.;
- Provide emergency response as per training when necessary;
- Collect data for daily reports and maintain records and reports;
- Assists with set-up and breakdown of activities and cleaning of program area;
- Maintain a positive and appropriate relations with children, parents, staff, etc.;
- The Playground Counselor will attend and participate in program activities, staff meetings, staff trainings, etc.;
- Provide exceptional customer service;
- Be enthusiastic and make the playground a safe and fun place for the community.
The selected applicant must possess great communication skills to ensure the highest level of customer service, have knowledge of safe work practices, ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions and have the ability to be trained in RecTrac (recreational software). The physical requirements of the job include but are not limited to: walking, standing, sitting for extended times, jogging, running and jumping for the purpose of instructing/leading recreation programs, lifting up to 30lbs and operating assigned equipment and vehicles as needed. Must have reliable transportation and work as scheduled from June through August.
The Job is NON-EXEMPT under FLSA.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Driver's License “OR” reliable means of transportation
- High School Diploma/GED
- Prior experience working with school-aged children
- Ability to work as scheduled from June through August
- Prior experience using Word and Excel software programs
- Current First Aid and CPR certification (“OR” ability to obtain before camp starts)
An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications):
- Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in education or related field
- Current First Aid and CPR certification (“OR” the ability to obtain before camp starts)
- Prior experience with recreation management software
- Bilingual (Spanish, Vietnamese etc…)
Other Recruitment Criteria:
- May apply to participate in a First Aid / CPR class for staff prior to summer season to attain certifications
- Must be available to report to work for orientation and training in early June 2025.
- Program will start on June 2025
